Susan Estrich: 'Lack of Diversity' at Apple Caused 'iPad' Name
NewsBusters ^ | February 3, 2010 | P.J. Gladnick

There are some stories that make you cover your eyes with your hand and groan. And this column by Susan Estrich about what she thinks is the poorly named Apple iPad is definitely one of those. Here is Estrich putting on her feminist cap and making a very long stretch on blaming the name "iPad" on a "lack of diversity" at Apple:

Is there a woman in America who did not laugh, or at least roll her eyes, the minute she heard that the newest, hottest tablet computer from one of America's most ingenuous companies was going to sound like a feminine hygiene product? The iKotex is what most people I know are calling it, with apologies to Kotex.

So where were those women? The short answer is that, plainly, they were not in the room. Go to Apple's home page and look at the pictures and bios of key executives. I'll tell you who you'll find: Steve, Timothy, Scott, Jonathan, Ron, Bob, Peter, Mark, Philip, Bertrand and Bruce. All white, all men. If there is a "top" woman at Apple, at best she's No. 12.

Groan alert! Did anybody here think of "iKotex" when the "iPad" was revealed?

So the IBM ‘Thinkpad’ was also the result of poor diversity? Some people need to find a hobby or something to occupy their time.

Um, no... Must be her “brand”. This really IS a stretch. I noticed she said, “White Men” as well. Does she think if a black man were in the board room the name would’ve been different? It’s clear they called it the iPad because it’s like an electronic legal pad (OF PAPER!!!). Yes, I chuckled at the name, but that’s about it. It’s actually quite intelligent as it has gotten people talking about it who may not have given it a second thought in the first place.

No, I thought it was kind of retro - a throwback to the 60s and 70s when people referred to their house/apartment as their "pad." Which is not all bad - the iPad could be your "home" on the Internet...

Really, what I thought was how many more products are we going to see with the "i" prefix before Apple moves on to another marketing theme?

iPad. Big deal, it actually is a little less creative than you'd expect from Apple. It has the requisite "i" prefix and the primary feature that distinguishes it is a touchpad. Maybe marketing took the day off and they let an engineer name it.

It’s clear they called it the iPad because it’s like an electronic legal pad (OF PAPER!!!).

And it plays off of the "iPod" brand name that is now so ingrained int he public consciousness that it is basically a generic term to refer to an entire class of products (see also: Kleenex, Aspirin, and the once-ubiquitous Walkman).

Once people get over their juvenile snickering, they'll be lining up to buy 'em.

I’m female and I swear until 30 seconds ago the thought never occured to me. I think Susan needs some diversity in her life.

Oh good grief. Double entendres on the word “pad” have been around since fem. hygiene commercials. I remember as a kid, the woman on the screen beckoning “Come on over to my pad.” In those groovy days, people dug speaking in a far-out colloquial that included the word “pad” to refer to one’s domicile, usually an apartment. The word “crib” is used in some sub-cultures in a similar manner.

“Groan alert! Did anybody here think of “iKotex” when the “iPad” was revealed?”

No, and I don’t understand the juvenile mindset that seems focused on this association.

Does the “legal pad” suffer in the same way? How about “launch pad”? “Helipad”?

I thought iPad was the best name for the device, as a complement to “iPod”. Still do, despite the rampant Apple bashing over the name. Some people complain about the silliest things...

The definition of ‘pad’ as a tablet used for writing and reading pre-dates by hundreds of years the use of the word meaning a feminine personal product, Suzie.

As for your outrage at Apple’s choice of the name iPad, Suzie, I wanna show you something. It’s my shocked face.

Her bizarre comment aside, it's not even a remotely accurate graphic of the iPad.
Here's the correct one:

iPad

I posted a photo of Kotex to the below FR thread one week ago today, when the iPad was released.

Here's proof:
