1877 is a “convenient” place to cleve US history because Reconstruction. Obviously if the class started in say 1865 then that class would have to somehow discuss the events that lead to Reconstriction.
I assume 1877 was chosen as marking the final end of Reconstruction (it actually ended sooner in some states). But it could be because of the death of Crazy Horse, or because that was the year that the two moons of Mars were discovered (Phobos and Deimos).

maybe they don’t like those in NC knowing the truth and how their ancestors were abused
there’s a reason why they did this and a reason why they picked those dates and it is high time we made them answer
