Republicans attack military leadership to defend ban on gays (Sen. John "Lurch" Kerry)

Stunning. That was my reaction when I listened to a freshman Republican Congressman rebut the principled position of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, and the Secretary of Defense Bob Gates, that the policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" needed to end and that gay members of the Armed Services should be able to serve their country without fear that just being who they are would end their service.

It was especially alarming to hear the judgment of Admiral Mullen and Secretary Gates dismissed so easily as 'biased.'

Anyone who knows Admiral Mullen or Bob Gates knows damn well that neither of them say what any Administration just wants them to say. This is, after all, Secretary Bob Gates - a lifelong Republican who was appointed to positions of high trust and leadership by President Ronald Reagan, President George Herbert Walker Bush, and President George W Bush. This is a Defense Secretary who planned to leave government and had to be talked into continuing to serve in a Democratic Administration. He is doing his duty today out of patriotism, not political ambition or partisanship.

They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam......

This from a treasonous bastard who lied to Congress about our military and met with representatives of the enemy side in France.

He stood shoulder to shoulder with Bill Clinton at campaign appearances in 2004 and dared to question GW Bush's military service while standing along side someone who "loathed" the military and dodged the draft.

Yesterday, as i watched Gates refuse to give his opinion on whether the crotch bomber should be tried in a civilian court i knew that he had compromised his principles to keep his job.

Always been queers in the military; can't figure what the big deal about all this is?

When I came back from Korea in 70's, got stationed at ft Bragg. We had this one blk E-5, nobody knew he was a cross dresser until he got busted fro prostitution down on Hay Street. Ha, He wasn't a bad guy actually; until we all knew he was a big queer; then nobody even talked to him no more; ha. There was always one or two in every company, no joke.

Ed Wood Jr. (director of Plan 9 From Outer Space, immortalized in the biopic starring Johnny Depp) was a veteran and lifelone heterosexual transvestite. He claims he wore woman’s panties under his uniform and was fearful of getting killed in combat and having his secret discovered.

If that’s what it takes to motivate you not to fail in combat, then so be it...

However, we live in a different day and time. As soon as the military approves open homosexuals, you will have the foundation of homosexual support organizations within the military system.

Drop the other shoe altogether and have men and women regardless of sexual preference shower and bunk together.

When you're wrong, it doesn't matter who you are, or what your title is, you're still wrong. That includes Emperors, Kings, Presidents, Popes and military leaders.

The left, which marches in lockstep, is baffled by principled opposition.
