The problem w/ defense companies is that they build secrecy into their culture. That is understandable.

Where this goes wrong is that everyone gets into the habit of lying to everyone else, and expect to be lied to in turn. Therefore, when the truth matters, it cannot be found.

We may wind up defenseless and broke.

We're already broke; Obama is well on his way to making us defenseless.

F22 OR F35?

False dichotomy.

Gates also announced he is withholding $614 million in fees from the prime contractor, Lockheed Martin.

Yeah—withholding $$ from the Contractor is a great way to motivate them to do better. [/s]

Looks who is running the Pentagon show. We have a SECDEF who fires everyone for not "taking responsibility", and he won't take responsibility for himself. He has proven to be a disaster, an "Obama Yes Man", and now pushes homosexuality on our military. We have a Chairmen of Joint Chiefs who is more concerned about "Diversity" than security of our nation. The same for the Army Chief of Staff after troops and civilians were maimed and murdered.

Robert Gates Unleashed: "What Are They Going To Do, Fire Me?"

Adm. Mullen: Repealing 'Don't ask, don't tell' is the 'right thing to do'

General Casey: diversity shouldn’t be casualty of Fort Hood

The administration decision to scrap a proven aircraft in favor of a supposedly cheaper, more flexible replacement is proving to be an expensive mistake.

The "expensive mistake" was ("were" actually):

1.) Not building the F-22 with a weapons-bay large enough to handle 2000lb class weapons.

2.) Not building the F-22N NATF.

I'd settle for the F-22 Raptor. It's matured, already in production and has all-aspect stealth, supercruise, supermaneuverability and dogfighting capability.

The Raptor's program cost ~$65 billion. The Lightning II's program has cost ~$300 billion and overrunning.

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter that was supposed to be America's frontline fighter for the foreseeable future is in big trouble. Defense Secretary Robert Gates fired the general in charge of the program this week amid concerns of spiraling costs and program delays. Gates also announced he is withholding $614 million in fees from the prime contractor, Lockheed Martin. Daniel J. Crowley, one of Lockheed Martin's project managers, has acknowledged that the program is running at least six months behind schedule.
Number one, we need both; number two, we need drones, and lots of them, and lots of personnel to maintain and operate them; number three, we need to rid our country of traitors, because the first serious threat is obviously from within. Thanks Kaslin.

The F-35 Navy version is way over weight, over budget and way behind schedule. The F-22 may be the last fighter we ever build.

Okay. $16 billion in over-runs for more fighters compared to upteen TRILLION frigging dollars for who knows what? I can live with $16 billion.

I am now in Bizarro World. Forget that the main mandate of the Fedgov is to protect its citizens/nation.

To bad neither of these fighters will be used much. Our military is decaying, and we are not building the next generation of weapons.

What the author doesn’t know, or chooses to ignore, is that the F-22 is a pure fighter and not designed or equipped for ground attack. The F-35 is. So buying more F-22s and fewer F-35s is not solving the problem. Maybe the solution is to scrap the F-35, increase the buy of F-22s by another hundred and fifty or so, and buy upgraded versions of the F-15, F-16, and F-18 for Navy and ground attack roles.
