Did Michelle Obama Send the Wrong Message With Obesity Comments?
ABC News ^ | 5 Feb 10 | HUMA KHAN

Michelle Obama has earned accolades for making healthy living and eliminating childhood obesity a priority as first lady. But when it came down to personalizing the issue in relation to her daughters, the remarks touched a nerve with some, and praise from others.

The first lady made the issue of healthy eating personal last week at an event in Alexandria, Va., where she kicked off a campaign addressing the issue of childhood obesity.

"We went to our pediatrician all the time," Obama said. "I thought my kids were perfect -- they are and always will be -- but he [the doctor] warned that he was concerned that something was getting off balance."

"I didn't see the changes. And that's also part of the problem, or part of the challenge. It's often hard to see changes in your own kids when you're living with them day in and day out," she added. "But we often simply don't realize that those kids are our kids, and our kids could be in danger of becoming obese. We always think that only happens to someone else's kid -- and I was in that position."

Obama said the doctor suggested she first look at her daughters' body mass index (BMI). The minor changes she subsequently made in their daily habits, Obama said, made all the difference.

The first lady's comments have stirred up the Web and medical world, and have drawn both criticism and praise. Some say Obama should not have personalized the issue and brought up her daughters. Even if it is for the greater public good, critics say, it does not bode well for their self-image. .....

The first lady's office would not comment on the criticism.

Michelle Obama's behavior is very strange. It almost seems she is trying to throw her daughters under the bus (in a very public way) in order to distract from the fact that she herself has a less than perfect body. Let's face it - Michelle Obama's summer shorts could be used as a pup tent.

Why she is doing this is just bizzare.

The one good thing I have been able to say about this person is that she has done a good job of keeping her kids out of the spotlight.

No more--and what an awful way to use them!

About the only thing the Obamas have ever done right is make very pretty children.

Those poor kids probably have no idea their mother is evil shrew.

The nobamas’ weight problems are diametrically opposed, i.e., his is excess fat between his ears and hers is her gi-normous caboose. leave the children alone.

I don’t know. The older girl definately resembles a much cuter version of Michelle.
The younger one throws me off a bit, though.

The both seem well mannered, however, which is a small miracle consider who their parents are.

I don't have a problem with what she said. Her goal was to explain how small changes in diet can have big, positive results. She was also making the point that her kids were "growing" and she had not noticed it until the doctor called her attention to it.

I don't have a problem with her comments--she's talking to the parents who have O-word (I don't want to offend the obese) kids.
