What these reports leave out is how coreographed these exercises are. They’re designed specifically to put friendly forces at a disadvantage. SSNs are noise augmented. Certain systems or capabilities can’t be used. Forces out of position. And then there are the stovepipes, moving havens buffers and other and water restrictions that are put in place for safety reasons to ensure that submerged submarines can operate in proximity to each other.
It all makes for a valuable training experience, but one has to resist the urge to read too much into it.

Bingo—I remember being on my last boat, playing games with the DE boats from other countries. The constraints put on us were so ridiculous as to be extreme. If it ever got into a “gloves coming off” shooting war, they’d be fine if they never left 25-50 miles from their homeport. Any farther out than that, and they’re screwed. Even diesel boats make noise on batteries, and they can’t stay on those forever.

Wow, now that is something I did not know. So in reality we are not at as much of a disadvantage as the whole report eludes to? What about the suicide nuclear hull filled idea as in suicide mission. You do not think it is a possibility that the whole sub could become a nuclear torpedo by getting close enough if undetected? I mean the navy it obviously preparing for any and all scenarios I am sure.

They're also done to gather valuable intel on DE boats' capabilities. Detection isn't futile or so I've been told.
