Back when we knew better, a fellow could actually get impeached for that (wink).
The truth was spectacular enough in Kerik’s case. He didn’t need to lie in order to look good. There are tax evasion charges too which strike me as odd. He had the fame, he didn’t have to fudge his tax return to rake in a lot of cash.

He "fudged" on his tax return by failing to disclose the free work that was being done on his condominium by the Mafia contractor seeking city contracts.
The whole affair was a very sordid one. I suspect he was run through the wringer in a very public way because there was a lot behind the scenes that hasn't been made public at all.
