This editorial boards No. 1 priority is improving the state of higher education in Texas. The governor is a powerful force in determining the direction of higher education in Texas: The governor alone appoints each member of the UT System Board of Regents and of all university boards in Texas, and the regents decide nearly everything else.
For that reason, we suggest that students vote in the Republican primary, a race that will have more bearing on higher-education policy than any other.
For those committed to other races or perhaps unable to bring themselves to cast a ballot in a Republican primary we easily endorse Bill White, who leads the field in the Democratic race. The former Houston mayor has run a clean campaign characteristic of an experienced politician, and the low-energy race has given White the opportunity to define clear policy goals, which include the establishment of a public-service program for students that could fund their in-state college tuition.
Despite the races lower profile, we remain energized by White, who will likely give Democrats their best shot at taking the Governors Mansion in 20 years.
The presumed leader in the Republican race, Gov. Rick Perry, has failed to lead Texas universities successfully. He has appointed regents based on seemingly nothing more than their contributions to his campaigns, removing those who switched their financial support to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchisons campaign last year and replacing them with new campaign contributors.

Endorsement of death from the Tea Sippers.
No thanks......do not need another Rino.
KBH is hideous. A big-haired RINO who we need to send packing.
The media blocked out coverage of all of the other candidates in the Democrat governor’s primary.
While White would get the majority, he may not get enough to clinch the nomination with 10 people in the race. But by casting the race as White against the Palestinian hairdressing product tycoon, the media has determined the outcome of the primary (no runoff).
The Daily Texan has done nothing but rag on her the entire time she has been in the Senate. They hate her guts. All of a sudden, she’s better than Perry! I don’t think the students at the DT can think far enough ahead to determine she would be easier for Bill White to defeat. But I do think the DT believes UT would be more likely to get more and more generous funding out of KBH, who loves to spend, than they would out of Perry, who has little patience with their posturing and BS.
While I can’t deny Perry has used his power to appoint Regents, it is kind of telling that they are pushing a UT grad over an Aggie. lol
Yep. It's as simple as that.
Yep the Tea Sip over the Aggie Yell Leader......... lol
The power a gov incurs via the appointment route is huge and to some degree a reason one could use for term limits.
Your pretty well correct. Kay Bay is getting all the newspaper’s endorsements. I learned a long time ago that if the paper endorses a candidate, then I vote against them. Plus the media generally promotes t.u. over A&M even in the sports media. t.u. produces a lot of news types and lawyers. The dallas morning news has always tried to make A&M out to be a hotbead of neanderthals. I guess if the media hates you, then you must be doing something right.
“The presumed leader in the Republican race, Gov. Rick Perry, has failed to lead Texas universities successfully. “
BS. Perry has helped research and education in Texas immensely and has put it on a path to reach new heights in the coming years. NAFTA superhighway building vaccine pusher he may be but bad on universities he is not.
How come all these newspapers want a Democrat governor?
Because newspapers are run by “journalists” -— which tend to be >80% hard left liberal across the board.
Already voted and it wasn’t for Kay!
No Kay Bay for me. Her idea of governing will be to get as much from DC as possible. This is all she has ever done is to bring pork home.
"If we post this crap often enough do you think they'll start believing it?"
"No. But this is Austin. It's what we do."
"Uh, I've got Cheet-os dust on my keyboard"
I’m a UT grad as well. but already in 1960 I was surprised to find so many what Glen Beck calls “progressives,” in the grad school. I was a liberal Democrat but found so many students who were to my left.!
It is always funny to me when an upper middle class kid from Texas goes to UT and becomes a liberal...Mom and Dad must be thrilled that in exchange for a good football team, they allowed their child to become a liberal. Of course there is hope that once they start paying taxes and raising kids themselves, they realize how stupid they have been. Well, except for the UT law school grads.. ;^)
