Ft. Hood suspect was Army dilemma (extreme views overlooked due to "diversity")
Boston Globe ^ | February 22, 2010 | Bryan Bender

WASHINGTON - Army superiors were warned about the radicalization of Major Nidal Malik Hasan years before he allegedly massacred 13 soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, but did not act in part because they valued the rare diversity of having a Muslim psychiatrist, military investigators wrote in previously undisclosed reports.

An obvious “problem child’’ spouting extremist views, Hasan made numerous statements that were not protected by the First Amendment and were grounds for discharge by violating his military oath, investigators found.

Examples of Hasan’s radical behavior have previously been disclosed in press accounts based on interviews with unnamed Army officials, including his defense of suicide bombings and assertions that Islamic law took priority over his allegiance to the United States.

But the Pentagon’s careful documentation of individual episodes dating back to 2005 and the subsequent inaction of his superiors have not been made public before.

The Globe was permitted to review the Army’s more complete findings on the condition that it not name supervisory officers who did not act, some of whom are facing possible disciplinary action.

In searching for explanations for why superiors did not move to revoke Hasan’s security clearances or expel him from the Army, the report portrays colleagues and superiors as possibly reluctant to lose one of the Army’s few Muslim mental health specialists.

The report concludes that because the Army had attracted only one Muslim psychiatrist in addition to Hasan since 2001, “it is possible some were afraid’’ of losing such diversity “and thus were willing to overlook Hasan’s deficiencies as an officer.’’

“Several of his supervisors explicitly mentioned Hasan’s potential to inform our understanding of Islamic culture and how it relates to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan,’’ the investigators found.

A country that prefers political correctness over survival will get its wish.

In all bureaucracies, and the Army is certainly one, the actors all want to pull in authority and push away from responsibility. The Army Chief, and the Joint Chief Mullen have all said that diversity is number one. Neither will be fired( certainly not by Prince Affirmative Action ) nor will they resign. There will be a ‘better’ diversity program instead.

Well, just who are the "some" - why haven't they been publicly ID'd and why haven't they been fired yet?

Gee, I’m so glad they told us. I would have never guessed that in a million years....NOT It was a tragedy waiting to happen. Wonder how many more times this type of thing will happen before our government gets a clue?

Wasn’t there a recent report stating that PC in no way interfered with the handling of Hasan’s questionable behavior prior to the incident?

“they valued the rare diversity”

In the corporate world, diversity is not valued, it is the law. You can be fired for not accepting any and all sorts of diversity. I would say that the Army is the same way.

“Hasan’s potential to inform our understanding of Islamic culture.....” that doesnt make sense.

His class presentation was shut down because of the reaction of the other students... (Not because it contained subversive statments and materials?)

Hasan’s instructors and superiors didnt react because the military is paralyzed by political correctness, every person knows their career will end if they violate any part of PC.

Clean house starting at the top and I only wish we could fire those at the top who have gone before the current brass. They are equally to blame as well.

“they valued the rare diversity of having a Muslim psychiatrist, military investigators wrote in previously undisclosed reports.”

This is an out and out lie. They didn’t value diversity, they valued their jobs and their careers. The diversity programs are not voluntary, they are enforced upon people. The only question is how much damage do these diversity programs have to cause before people finally wake up and get rid of them.

I would say that the Army is the same way.

Given that right after the Fort Hood Massacre, the Chief of Staff of the Army got on national TV and said that it wasn't as bad as losing diversity, I'd agree with you.

Do you honestly think anything would've been done about the haji bastard had he been reported? I can practically guarantee you nothing would've happened to him. The reporting officers would've been at least verbally reprimanded, though.

This is similar to the woman pilot who got bad flight reviews.

The instructor pilot who gave the bad review was dismissed and another gave her a pass.

Shortly she crashed an airplane into the back of a carrier and killed herself.

Heck...the Army brass at Fort Dix are probably interviewing Muslim health care professionals right now in order to maintain diversity.

“... he allegedly massacred 13 soldiers...”

Why is the word “allegedly” used in cases where it is witnessed by many people and cut and dried that the perp did the deed????

Probably go to trial...He gets a Muslim lawyer (or sympathizer) and they say 13 people died due to accidental discharges of his weapon as he was ‘cleaning” it... he is very sorry and remorseful (lower lip trembling). He promises it won’t happen again...Allah has forgiven him...

The problem with the military supervisory personnel is “fear.”

The system is set in concrete that those who rate minority subordinates - race, religious, gender or nationality - are afraid to make truthful comments or write assessments about said subordinate weaknesses or unfitness because they, the supervisors, become labeled as having poor interpersonal relations, are bigoted or narrow minded. This, of course, adversely affects future promotions and assignments. CYA

We used to have a convert to islam in one of our units. He finally got out when he found out he may be deployed to Iraq. Guess he didn't want to fight against the terrorists there.
