Mozelle Johnston students to experience Wii generation (Good Grief!!)
Longview News Journal ^

Mozelle Johnston Elementary School students soon will use a video game system during physical education classes.

PE teacher Karen Wilson on Tuesday received a $1,967 grant from the Longview ISD Foundation to buy three Nintendo Wii systems with Wii Sports and Wii Fit packages.

“I wrote the grant for the Wiis so the kids could experience the Wii generation,” Wilson said. “We’ll be able to do activities that we normally couldn’t because of time or restrictions. We don’t have the facilities to play tennis or Alpine skiing, but now students will be able to experience that. Plus, regular classroom teachers will be able to use them as a reward.”

Wilson’s Wii grant was one of 12 elementary school grants funded by the Longview ISD Foundation in its 15th annual grants-to-teachers program. The Foundation plans to award seven more grants next week to secondary school teachers.

The Foundation gets money throughout the year from such events as T-shirt sales, the Lobo Green Out and the Lamplighter Awards banquet, and gives the funds back to teachers through this program, Director Kay Ray said.

To put this in perspective, this is a very poor school where in many cases, teachers have to buy the school supplies for the kids.

Imagine all the jump ropes and kick balls that could have been purchased for the same price as one Wii.

My boys have a Wii. It is better than just having them sit around, but by no means does it give you the same kind of workout as running laps for an angry Gym teacher.

Unbelievable! While the wii reqires more physical exercion than most video game systems, it is no substitute for running, jumping and playing.

“PE teacher Karen Wilson on Tuesday received a $1,967 grant from the Longview ISD Foundation to buy three Nintendo Wii systems with Wii Sports and Wii Fit packages. “

A Wii console (which includes Wii Sports) costs $199.99.
A Wii fit add on costs $99.99
3 extra controllers with motion plus would cost $150.00
3 extra nunchuk controllers cost around $50.00

So each full Wii package should cost only $500, for a total of $1,500. Where did the other $467.00 go? Did the PE teacher get an extra one to take home to work on “lesson plans”? (We all know public school teachers stay up until 3:00 AM “grading papers” and “preparing lesson plans”.) /sarc

We caved on our no video games rule and gave the grandparents permission to give a Wii to the kids for Christmas. I'm regretting it. Even the most active games are a joke compared with real activities. Jump ropes and kick balls would be a far better investment.

Ok...forgot about boxing! Our 6 yr old daughter did 3 games in a row and started crying and wanted to quit during the 3rd game. Quitting is not allowed in this family. She finished strong, but did lie on the floor for a while. We still have just one remote, maybe the intensity will pick up when we are battling each other.

Beat me to it - if I was forced to humiliate myself at the command of a funny pant wearing, Brown Hornet looking, man-hating Electric Company extra, then so should these kids!!

Get wii resort and rac e canoes or sword fight. You will find muscles you haven’t used in a while. The battles rage hard at our house and we all work up a good sweat. Heck bowling or wii golf makes you get get up at least 9 times a game. it may not sound like much but compared to a kids just sitting there staring at the tv playin Halo or such this is great. plus the whole family can join in.

The Wiifit game is more than capable of raising heart and respiratory rates. The strength exercises are no joke, if you do them properly.

It's not the equivalent of using a universal or free weights, but it's a notch above calisthenics alone. My question would be how 3 systems will meet the needs of an entire class. Even with 4 controllers, that's just 12 students.

I've never heard of wii resort—sounds like fun. Thanks. My boys have almost broken through their wooden swords from years of use, they would love the high tech version.
