No reason given for the lockdown.
Nellis Air Force Base was placed on lockdown this afternoon and nearby streets were closed, authorities said.
Base spokesman Eugene Hill said the main gate was closed and the base was put on lockdown about 3 p.m. He said Metro Police are assisting, but it is unknown what caused the lockdown.
Metro spokesman Bill Cassell said officers are assisting with traffic control in the area. He said North Las Vegas Boulevard near East Craig Road has been shut down.
Traffic is being rerouted and drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
Nellis is the location of the United States Air Force Warfare Center and is a major training location for both U.S. and foreign military aircrews.

Nellis Air Force Base’s Main Gate On Lock Down

NELLIS AFB, NV (Upfront News) — Nellis Air Force Base told Upfront News late Friday its main gate was placed on lock down after an unknown incident nearby.
A spokesman for the base said Metro PD was on the scene and there was “no threat to the public” or the base. The spokesman said when there is law enforcement activity in the area, for example a store being robbed, it could prompt a lock down of areas of the base.
A spokesperson for the Metro Police Department could not be reached for comment.

Threat forces Nellis Air Force Base’s main gate to be locked down

Officials at Nellis Air Force Base say a threat made by someone at the main gate forced it to be locked down for a few hours Friday afternoon. It happened around 3pm.
Metro Police say a man claimed he had a bomb. Police took the man into custody without incident and he is now in the hands of federal officials. The main gate remains closed while the investigation continues.
