I believe that this pre-dates Islam although it may have gotten a boost from that religion and may have caused it to spread to other areas of the globe beyond Africa (in particular to Indonesia). Strange thing is, it's the women that are the ones that push this the most. Jealousy or vindictiveness? Who knows.
