BBC News - Five killed in attack on aid agency in Pakistan

(edit)

The victims, including two women, were all Pakistanis, reports say.

The attack took place on the office of the World Vision in Mansehra district, 65 km (40 miles), north of Islamabad, the police said.

(edit)

Police official Sajid Khan told the AFP news agency that some armed people had "stormed" the building of the NGO.

"There was firing and also an explosion inside," he said.

The police said that the gunmen opened fire and exploded grenades once inside the building.

One unidentified aid worker said the gunmen had "engaged in battle with the police" inside the building.

Local News - Aid group attacked in northwest Pakistan; 5 dead - Seattle Times Newspaper

(edit)

The attack targeted World Vision, a large Christian humanitarian group helping survivors of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake in Mansehra district. World Vision is headquartered in Federal Way, Wash.

(edit)

Al-Qaida, the Taliban and allied groups are strong in northwestern Pakistan, but Mansehra lies outside the tribal belt next to Afghanistan where the militants have their main bases

Extremists have killed other people working for foreign aid groups in Pakistan and issued statements saying such organizations were working against Islam, greatly hampering efforts to raise living standards in the desperately poor region.

The aid groups are seen by the militants as a challenge to their authority in regions under their influence.

They often employ women and support female rights initiatives, further angering the extremists.

World Vision is a Christian organization. It is Christianity that has these islamo-fascist terrorists foaming at the mouth like rabid dogs. They know nothing else but hatred that has gone on for 14 centuries. This hatred has gone on long enough to induce a hatred gene.

Suspected militants armed with grenades attacked the offices of an international aid group helping earthquake survivors in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing six employees and wounding several others, police and the organization said.

All the victims of the assault on World Vision, a large Christian humanitarian group, were Pakistanis.

(edit)

"We are deeply sorry we've lost staff members who were locals who were deeply committed to improving lives in Pakistan," said James East, a World Vision spokesman.

Two women were among the six dead, said Sajid Khan, an area police chief. Four people were wounded.

Many foreign aid groups set up offices in Mansehra after the 2005 earthquake, which killed about 80,000 people.

PAKISTAN
“At least five killed as gunmen attack NGO office in Mansehra”

Wednesday, 10 Mar, 2010

PESHAWAR:

SNIPPET: “The gunmen attacked offices of World Vision near Oghi town, in the district of Mansehra in the troubled North West Frontier Province, where Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants have carried out multiple attacks.

Police said five people were killed, including two women, but a spokesman for World Vision confirmed that four of its Pakistani staff died.

World Vision administration officer Mohammad Sajid told AFP that he was in the building when “more than 15 armed men” arrived in pick-up vehicles and stormed inside the offices.

“They gathered all of us in one room. The gunmen, some of whom had their faces covered, also snatched our mobile phones.

“They dragged people one by one and shifted to an adjacent room, and shot and killed them. We could see them firing,” he said.”

SNIPPET: “The Christian charity has been operating in the area since October 2005, when a massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless in Pakistan’s northwest.”

SNIPPET: “Four local staff with the British-run aid group Plan International were killed in a similar attack in Mansehra in February 2008, prompting some charities to withdraw their offices from the troubled area.

The Plan office was burned to the ground in the attack by gunmen who opened fire and hurled grenades, and the non-governmental organisation, which had been active in the area for 12 years, halted its operations in Pakistan.”

SNIPPET: “On February 3, a bomb attack in the NWFP district of Lower Dir killed three American soldiers and five other people at the opening of a school just rebuilt with Western funding after a militant attack.”

“US aid group attacked in Pakistan’s northwest; 6 killed”
By BILL ROGGIOMarch 10, 2010 1:07 AM

SNIPPET: “The Taliban stormed the office of a US aid group operating in northwestern Pakistan, killing six Pakistani employees.

Armed fighters attacked an office operated by World Vision International, a Christian charity that has been aiding victims of the devastating earthquake in 2005. The aid group has sought to provide schooling, jobs, food, and other basic needs for Pakistanis impacted by the earthquake and other natural disasters.

Police fought a major battle with the heavily armed Taliban fighters, who entered the World Vision office in the town of Oghi in Mansehra district.

“Some armed people stormed the building of World Vision NGO,” Sajid Khan, a police official, told AFP. There was firing and also an explosion inside.” The Taliban fighters hurled hand grenades in the office, according to police.”

SNIPPET: “But an unnamed aid worker present at the attack told AFP that six people were killed and six more were seriously wounded.

The Taliban have targeted aid groups in the region, claiming the groups are un-Islamic and are seeking to spread Christianity.”

As the Son of Hamas said in his well-publicized interviews last week, “There’s no such thing as moderate Islam.” But heck, what would he know?
