Howell Raines: Why Don't Honest Journalists Take on Roger Ailes and Fox News?
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday, March 14, 2010 | Howell Raines

Posted on 03/11/2010 5:34:32 PM PST by kristinn

One question has tugged at my professional conscience throughout the year-long congressional debate over health-care reform, and it has nothing to do with the public option, portability or medical malpractice. It is this: Why haven't America's old-school news organizations blown the whistle on Roger Ailes, chief of Fox News, for using the network to conduct a propaganda campaign against the Obama administration -- a campaign without precedent in our modern political history?

Through clever use of the Fox News Channel and its cadre of raucous commentators, Ailes has overturned standards of fairness and objectivity that have guided American print and broadcast journalists since World War II. Yet, many members of my profession seem to stand by in silence as Ailes tears up the rulebook that served this country well as we covered the major stories of the past three generations, from the civil rights revolution to Watergate to the Wall Street scandals. This is not a liberal-versus-conservative issue. It is a matter of Fox turning reality on its head with, among other tactics, its endless repetition of its uber-lie: "The American people do not want health-care reform."

SNIP

My great fear, however, is that some journalists of my generation who once prided themselves on blowing whistles and afflicting the comfortable have also been intimidated by Fox's financial power and expanding audience, as well as Ailes's proven willingness to dismantle the reputation of anyone who crosses him.

SNIP

As for Fox News, lots of people who know better are keeping quiet about what to call it. Its news operation can, in fact, be called many things, but reporters of my generation, with memories and keyboards, dare not call it journalism.

Health Care Insurance Reform can't stand up to scrutiny. Trying to defend or promote it just creates openings to expose it for the fraud that it is. Which is exactly why 0baMao, Pelosi and Reid have kept so much of it behind closed doors. Even its authors would rather not bring it up.

Kristinn,

Do the mods know you are making up stuff and attributing it to the New York Times?. That's just wrong.

where was this ‘journalist’ when ABC turned its network over to Obama to use as his mouthpiece? He thinks Fox lies about health reform? Just to be fair and balanced here, are his own preferred news outlets lying when they say bho is not a socialist? I don’t think he wants to go there.

Two reasons come immediately to mind:

1) In the MSM, there are no honest journalists.

2) That’s because -if they’re honest - they don’t write for any of the dinosaur pubs.

It is so appropriate that he looks like a cross between Dan Rather and Manuel Noriega.

As if NY Times, WAPO, LA Times, CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CNN (I could go on but why) didn't savage Bush for 8 years. I wish I subscribed to the WAPO so I could cancel my subscription. What a double standard! The sad part is that this creep thinks he's objective. Read Bernie Goldberg's books (Biased and Arrogance) to understand the mindset of a guy like Howell Raines. The MSM has had a virtual monopoly on news and information for the longest time and it's coming to an end. Newspapers are on a death watch and guys like Raines can't believe their world is crumbling. Let him stew.

Hey Howard, why doesn’t the SRM ever ax hard questions of the dim politicians instead of kissing their butt?

It never ceases to amaze me in regards to the extent of the left’s brainwashing. That idiot actually believes the malarkey he is espousing. My God, I do believe that liberalism is a mental disorder...I pray that these people find a cure, how they suffer so.

Oh they do, Mr. Raines.

They all submit their applications and try to get hired by FOX and Ailes, seeing as how their talents are very wasted at fraudulent "media outlets" in the MSM.
