carrier+ (AP) - NEW DELHI, March 12 (Kyodo)—India and Russia on Friday signed a deal to buy Mig-29 fighters and the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, Indian officials said.

The two countries inked the contract during a meeting in New Delhi between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The leaders of the two countries also signed five pacts to promote cooperation in space technology, nuclear reactors and fertilizer production.

Under the deal, India will buy 29 Mig-29 fighters and the Soviet-built aircraft carrier. Russia will deliver the carrier to India by the end of 2012.

Russia also agreed to construct up to 16 nuclear reactors in India, the Indian officials said.

India is expected to sign a contract with Russia later this year to buy 40 Su-30 MKI multi-purpose fighters.

Same deal. Actually signing the contract was delayed due to a dispute over the work to be done and the cost of same.

At least better INDIA than Iran, Venezuala or a few others I can think of. India, this week, is not a threat to anyone I can recall. Maybe India will have the courage to go after those pirates operating not far if not in the Indian Ocean. We sure as hell don’t. The Barbary Pirates were only a couple of centuries premature. They’d have made fortunes today, wouldn’t they?

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
