Schumer, Graham Unveil Immigration Reform Blueprint (INCLUDES "PATH TO CITIZENSHIP")
Roll Call ^ | 2010-03-19 | Jennifer Bendery & Jessica Brady

Posted on 03/18/2010 11:15:45 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) unveiled their bipartisan blueprint for comprehensive immigration reform Thursday, a move hailed by President Barack Obama as progress on an issue for which he has been criticized for ignoring.

“The American people deserve more than empty rhetoric and impractical calls for mass deportation. We urge the public and our colleagues to join our bipartisan efforts in enacting these reforms,” the Senators said in a Washington Post editorial posted online Thursday.

The Schumer-Graham outline entails four key components: a biometric Social Security identification card for employment verification; strengthened border security and interior law enforcement; a process for admitting temporary workers; and a controversial path toward citizenship for illegal immigrants currently living in the United States.

Under the proposal, employers would be allowed to hire illegal immigrants only if they were unsuccessful in recruiting Americans for open positions. Undocumented workers living in the country would have to pay fines and back taxes and perform community service in order to earn citizenship. They would also have to pass background checks and become proficient in English.

Obama called the blueprint “promising” and said it should be the basis for moving forward with legislation. But he stopped short of pledging to make immigration reform a reality in 2010, vowing only to “to do everything in my power to forge a bipartisan consensus this year.”

“My administration will be consulting further with the Senators on the details of their proposal, but a critical next step will be to translate their framework into a legislative proposal, and for Congress to act at the earliest possible opportunity,” Obama said.

You want a penalty for entering the US illegally? No citizenship!!Not now !! Not ever!! Get a green card, pay taxes but no citizenship for you, your spouse, your relatives. Only your natural born in the US children will ever be citizens. You have five years to learn English and any crime greater than a speeding ticket will result in deportation. I can live with this.

Yesterday the Hispanic Caucus threw it’s support behind Obamacare for a trade off of amnesty and insuring every latino enclave everywhere. Keep in mind, Medicare payments for those of us who have paid in our entire lives, will be cut.

[snips]“I am so pleased that the reconciliation bill released today provides fair and just treatment to the 4.4 million Americans living in Puerto Rico and its sister territories, who have been treated unequally under federal health programs for too long,” said Rep. Pedro Pierluisi (D-Puerto Rico).

“Today’s bill constitutes a remarkable reversal from where we stood just a few weeks ago. The bill will provide $6.3 billion in new Medicaid funding for the territories in the form of an estimated 182% increase to their current federal funding caps. This represents nearly a tripling of the total Medicaid funding the territories would receive under current law. In addition, whereas the Senate bill strictly limited how new Medicaid funding could be spent, the reconciliation bill gives Puerto Rico and the other territories flexibility to determine how best to use this funding to expand coverage and improve services. Finally, while the Senate bill excluded the U.S. citizens in the territories from the Health Care Exchange, the bill released today provides our constituents with access to the Exchange and $1 billion to offer subsidies to individuals and families of modest means who participate in an Exchange. I am so grateful to the leadership and the members of the CHC for their unstinting support for fair treatment for Puerto Rico and the other territories.”

Members of the Caucus also noted that the legislation makes significant investments to expand community health centers throughout the nation. By directing funding to health care services and for the operation, expansion, and construction of community health centers nationwide, the bill will improve care for all Americans, but be particularly beneficial to Latinos and those living in underserved communities.

Parts of our country already are mexicamerica. Visited Los Angeles “My Home Town” lately? Also: Southern New Mexico, Southern Arizona, El Paso, Laredo and ESPECIALLY the entire Lower Rio Grande Valley have been colonized, conquered and taken over by Mexico. They are crap holes. All display the same social pathology as Mexico does, poverty, crime, government and judicial corruption, incompetence, tottering Rule of Law, disintegrating infrastructure, horrible schools, high percentage of dependent and therefore easily manipulated people. Parts of Illinois, New Jersey and Georgia are on their way.

Usually, congresscrooks don’t want to vote for amnesty in an election year, but this time leftists have pretty much lost their seats already. Plus, in 2007 it was Bush’s amnesty, so Dems like McCaskill had that motivation to vote against it. This time, it would be Obama’s amnesty.

What about 10% unemplayment? I hope that’s enough, but since the CBO says that Obamacare will reduce the deficit, I am afraid we will hear that illegal aliens decrease unemployment too.

This is another plague that Obamacare brings. As soon as Heathcare Deform passes, they can move on to amnesty.

WHY would an illegal immigrant want citizenship when they suffer no consequesnces of breaking our laws and have more rights and entitlements than American citizens?

We won’t hear that it decreases unemployment, HOWEVER, they’ve already been pushing the BS that amnesty is needed to keep the economy from worsening.

They could vote for Dems (or worse -- we may see an openly socialist/la raza party gain power) legally. And then we will have all kinds of fun.

There you go. If the economy gets worse, fewer jobs.

The "path to citizenship" I support for an illegal leads out through our border, back to his home country and to the end of the immigration line where he can fill out the forms, meet the requirements and take the test, just like very other legal immigrant.

No amnesty; no shortcuts.

Even if some fines and back taxes are paid, that does not compensate for the net costs to healthcare, the prison system, the court costs, the drain to S.S., etc.

We need to import brains, not ‘brawns. We need to import euntraprenuers, not socialists.

Socialists are.

Right. I realize that with enough freedom and ethical leadership, Mexico could be an excellent source of brain importation. But as it stands, they are largely the enemies of freedom.
