"Doctors Think Differently About the New Health Care Law"
Last night Dan Harris presented a report to Dianne Sawyer showing that doctors are split on whether health care reform is good or bad for the country. During the report, Harris points out that Mitt Romney’s social medicine program has been a disaster (my words) for Massachusetts.
Harris: The reason there is such a shortage of primary care physicians already is that many young doctors opt for more lucrative, higher-prestige specialties like surgery or dermatology. Massachusetts illustrates the shortage; health care reform passed in that state in 2006 but the new patient wait to see a primary care physician is 44 days, the longest in the nation. The new law does try to encourage doctors to go into primary care by giving them some bonuses and even helping with their student loans. But some experts are not sure that will be enough to get more people into primary care.
"It's a beginning," said Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, chairman of the Sullivan Alliance in Washington, D.C., and a former secretary of Health and Human Services. "But this is really just a fraction of what is needed."
Harris: He said that we need a national effort, like the Manhattan Project, to get more doctors into primary care. It's been done before, he said. In the 1950s, facing a doctor shortage, Congress funded many new medical schools, doubling the number of doctors. But right now, he said, the government is "missing in action."
Sawyer: Still, it’s got to be a ‘Manhattan Project’ if it’s going to work.
Harris: Huge undertaking.

Harris and Sawyer just revealed to the country that it will take a massive "Manhattan Project" to FIX the doctor shortage – CAUSED BY OBAMACARE! And neither one of them realized that such a thing would cancel out ANY savings -- real or imagined -- that ObamaCare is supposed to give us.

I’m not a Romney fan by any stretch and I do not support Romneycare. But to Romney’s defense Masshealth was never meant to be an entitlement. Everyone was required to pay into the system or pay a higher tax-rate. The democrats changed the law and put in a means test to determine affordablility for the health insurance. Masshealth was supposed to be run the same as car insurance. Romney points this out everytime to his critics but if he didn’t see those changes coming then he is unfit for office. The first thing they teach you at West Point is “know your enemy”.
The doctor shortage has been caused partly by the AMA, which limits the number of medical-school spots. Putting unqualified students in some of those spots also limits the number of doctors who make it into practice.
