Republican gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez gained in stature at todays Republican Party preprimary nominating convention. Allen Weh did what he needed to do. And Pete Domenici Jr. is down but not necessarily out.
Thats how Albuquerque pollster Brian Sanderoff analyzed the results following todays vote.
Martinez won the support of 46.65 percent of delegates at the Republican convention. Weh finished second with 26.32 percent, followed by Janice Arnold-Jones at 13.16 percent and Doug Turner at 9.23 percent. Domenici finished last, with 4.61 percent of the vote.
The big surprise here is the margin of Susana Martinezs victory, Sanderoff said. The second thing that stands out, besides her superb performance, is Pete Domenicis weak performance.
If they want to a place on the ballot, candidates who dont pass the organizational test of winning the support of 20 percent of convention delegates are required by law to collect twice as many signatures as those who do win 20 percent. No candidate who failed to win 20 percent at the convention has ever come back to win the primary.
Regardless, Arnold-Jones, Turner and Domenici all say they plan to stay in the race, which will require about 1,200 more signatures from each.

IMHO, the rest of the Republican field should drop and rally around Martinez, who strikes me as being a great candidate.
I know nothing about the candidates or the issues unique to NM. What are the big issues there — other than ObamaCare, 10th Amendment & State Sovereignty, and illegal immigration?
I don’t know the answer to that, as I’m not from there. A New Mexico Freeper could give you the answer to your question (posting #3).
Ditto! Maybe fieldmarshaldj knows.
We were talking about this last week.

Somewhere on that long thread.
I agree she’s the right horse for this race.
Right now, the big issue is the state budget. Under Richardson and the freespending Democrats, they’ve left the state in a wreck.
What's good about her is that she won and has been re-elected as Dona Ana County attorney in an area where Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1. In strong Hispanic culture NM she is fully Latino and not like Richardson who touts his heritage but is only half Latino and more of a carpetbagger than she who has been down in the trenches.
PING! to the NM list.
(Please let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list)
Off topic, but on Villanucci’s show yesterday I heard Billy mention in the background that Kokesh had submitted “enough” signatures to get on the ballot in District 3.
It is time to break up these dynasty families. The Domenici’s and Udalls, and other families who think that they are royalty and should control the lives of those in the states need to be kicked to the curb. We need some new line of thinking.
Register as a Democrat so you can mess up their primaries, then vote for your choice in the open National Election.
Not happy to hear that. Guess a donation to Mullins campaign is in order:
Besides the budget, which is rapidly going in the red due to Richardson's expanding state government, is the environment. The enviro-nazis have already shut down the timber and mining industries and now have set their sights on the oil and gas sector which provides the lion's share of revenues to state coffers.
It is an area I know something about and the environmentalists in the state agency are waging war against the industry by holding them accountable for all the sins of their predecessors going back 50-60 years and longer. Their goal is to drive them out of the state in the name of the environment, endangered species, groundwater protection, etc.
Tijeras, have you heard Villanucci's stance on Kokesh (if he has one), has Kokesh been on the air with Villanucci?
I listen to Villanucci's show, but only while commuting, so I miss a lot of it. I know Villanucci comments often that he thought the war in Iraq was wrong. I never listened to him before last year, so I'm not certain how he treated the Bush years. I know he bashes Bush a lot.
Ummm, if conservative Republicans were all to switch their registration to Democrat, wouldn't the RINO wing of the Republican party win by default?
I don’t think he’s been on any of the KKOB shows, I get the impression they’ve been ignoring him because they know he’s a fake and agent provocateur.
Villanucci is ok, not conservative by my way of thinking, but entertaining enough.
Agreed. He doesn't put up with the B.S. and appears to be a Reagan fan. Works for me. I supported Bush for taking the war to the terrorists, but was very disappointed with him on domestic issues.
Domenici Jr. is a Republican and frankly a nice individual. but he is over his head running for governor as his first race. Turner is young and is spending an awful lot of money to make himself known. Weh is former state chairman; I found his speech last Friday too strident for my liking. Jones didn’t show up; she is an ABQ area candidate. I think Martinez did the most to impress me at the TP rally.
BTW, Stewart Udall died last weekend in Santa Fe.
Agree with you. Domenici is also suffering from professional politician burn-out, anti-dynasty sentiment. Turner seems like he’s running for class president. Jone’s ads stink, she can’t even read the script articulately (of course, spare me from politicians that are the Lords of the teleprompter). I like Weh but think he can’t get enough in the general. Martinez is the best of the bunch, I like what I’ve heard in interviews.
