Census Bureau Not as `Cuddly' as it Seems

Like most bureaucrats, Robert Groves, the director of the U.S. Census Bureau, has cultivated a poker face that works pretty well when he's fending off irksome questions from congressmen about why he spent $2.5 million on a TV ad during the Super Bowl or $3 million training employees who were fired before they worked a single day.

But through careful observation of Groves' body language, it's possible for trained observers to interpret his words. When he scratches his right ear, for instance, he's telling the truth. When he cups his chin in his hand or rests a finger on his left cheek, he's telling the truth. And when he waves a census form in his hand and says, `Your answers are confidential, the Census Bureau cannot give out information that identifies you or your household,'' he's lying.....

I filled out my form, but I haven’t mailed it. I was somewhat offended because the Census Bureau doesn’t really want to know anything about ME. They just want to know my race and the race of anyone living here.

However, they don’t want to know about my mixed blood of English, Irish, Swedish origins — or my husband’s of Scots & Italian origin. Apparently we don’t count. They don’t even want to know how many toilets or TVs we have, as in the past.

I have filled out mine except for race.

I’m just “white” so that means I don’t qualify for any freebies or head-of-line priviliges.

They care if an Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander is in one of a dozen or two sub-categories.

But they don’t give a damn about “whites.”

I’m tempted to put down that I’m a Native American, but there is no “other” category for just-plain-whites.

I don’t thnk this adminstration plans to even look at those census forms. They will just pretend to. They will gerrymander as they wish.

My 1st American ancestor came here in 1607 (Jamestown, 1st Supply) and on the other side — 1638 New Sweden (a short lived colony in the Philadelphia area). I guess they don’t care how many of us descend from the Founders. In fact, they don’t seem to care about the Founders at all. Or the Constitution. Or the Bill of Rights. I suppose we’re lucky that they can’t identify us. They’d probably come to take our houses. They may do that too. There’s that pesky little question about whether we have a mortgage on our homes...

I think this time I’m going to be an Eskimo, and I’ll make my wife, ........ Antartican? (yeah yeah, for you Geography wizards out there, I know no body lives there.) Wonder how they will classify her? Or maybe just put down that she’s from the Moon and they are called Lunatics. (She’d like that one). I’d just like to throw a monkey wrench into this BULLS*** system we have now.

The form I received has the following statement on the last page:

Respondents are not required to respond to any information collection unless it displays a valid approval number from the Office of Management and Budget

Only the first four questions have an OMB number. Those questions are:

1) How many people were living or staying in the dwelling ?
2) Were there any additional people living there ?
3) Was the dwelling owned or rented ?
4) What is your telephone number ?

I was really surprised at how FEW questions were on my form. I could fill it out in less than five minutes. In the past I remember a lot more questions. Do some people get a longer form or does every household get the same one? Yeah, I mailed it back,too. If Im gonna be a civil disobedient it will be over something else dearer to me.
