What’s the law in Texas? Wouldn’t the Gov. appoint an interim seat filler until the special election?

That’s the question I would like to see answered.

Correct.... The governor will appoint a replacement until a special election can be held on an approved election date. At that time a senator would be elected to fill the remainder of the term which expires in 2012. The gov could call an emergency special election if the approved election date is a long way off but he doesn’t have to. Also the special election is a jungle type where all candidates run on the same ballot [no primary] and the winner must have 50%+1 to win or there is a run off between the top two voter getters regardless of party.
