McCain: GOP hopes to sidestep veto in repeal efforts(Burr and Kirk back off repeal)

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Thursday backed a plan that he says would allow the Republicans to avoid a presidential veto while negating the effects of a new healthcare law.

The 2008 GOP presidential nominee backed a plan that would strip funding from the healthcare law, which he says would not take an override to a veto to accomplish.

"When I say repeal, people say you're not going to be able to do it," he said on KQTH FM Radio. "I am confident we will get majorities in both houses in the fall. And that means the power of the purse...If we cut off the money, it doesn't take an override to a veto."

McCain's comments shows that GOPers are considering alternatives to strike down the healthcare law, passed with a party-line vote this month, outside of repealing it outright.

Eliminating funds for the health law would likely be done through the appropriations process in Congress, but it is unclear how Republicans would accomplish their goal by sidestepping a veto. Under the constitution, the president has the right to veto any bill that is passed by Congress.

McCain's office has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Two Republican lawmakers this week, Rep. Mark Kirk (Ill.), who is running for Senate, and Sen. Richard Burr (N.C.), backed away from pledges they made to repeal the health law.

Some Republicans and Democrats have said that the prospect of repealing it is highly unlikely because the GOP would need to win two-thirds majorities in both houses to overcome a veto from President Barack Obama.

Still, conservatives have demanded that Republican lawmakers enact a full repeal of the $940 billion measure.

Kirk also has a prolife libertarian opponent:

“When I say repeal, people say you're not going to be able to do it,”

Not in 2010, but then that's what 2012 is there for. Just vote the Kenyan Marxist out, and killing 0bamcare will follow.

McCain is calling in all his markers from his fellow Senators. They're letting him take the lead in the charge to save his _ss. Hope it fails. McCain thinking brought us here. We need real opponents to Obamacare, not wink and nod Johnny.

They both must be progressive socialists in the McCain/Graham mold. Send them home and elect conservatives.

Oh please, Juan. If you win in November, you’ll be right back “across the aisle”, selling out the American people in order to get invitations to the “IN” DC cocktail parties. You’re a conservative exactly once every 6 years, you phony.

I’m sick of spineless, gutless, RINO eunuchs. Thank God we have men with gonads in Afganistan and Iraq.

I have said this from the beginning. Shut down the funds and it will dry up like the Mexican Fence.

Shouldn’t be a problem if the GOP recaptures the House and Senate. After Obama vetoes the repeal, the Senate and the House can “deem” his veto over-ridden.

Shut down the funds and it will dry up like the Mexican Fence.

It will still remain on the books as the law. Defunding is only kicking the can down the road; once Democrats regain control of Congress, they'll fund it.

It must be repealed completely.

There’s other ways too. Add back strong HSAs (Health Savings Accounts), cross state purchases. The lawyers deserve a good screwing too. Do everything to ‘help the chillin’ while you gut the monster.

Lawsuits would force the government to provide services that citizens are entitled to. De-funding is not a good option, it will just make Republicans look like Grinches when some old lady with a medical problem can't get the coverage that is provided by law. Instead, it must be eliminated, in one fell swoop, early on before people get used to it, and replace with a free market solution.

If the Supreme Court doesn't do its job, then the GOP must do it. They can vote on repeal after winning back Congress, let Obama veto it, then run against him on it. They can repeal in 2013 after getting the White House. If they dither on it, they will not win back anything. The Tea Party is crucial to forcing the GOP to be conservative.

Burr should be throw out on his ear then. The other RINO guy is from Illinois so what should we expect.

The problem is and has always been having conservative states electing liberal rats. How can the Dakotas, Montana, Colorado, Virgina and other southern states, etc. vote for this abomination?

It would be like Massachusetts electing Ann Coulter.
