After Abramoff pleaded guilty to federal crimes, several tribes asked lawmakers to return donations. But Choctaw Chief Philip Martin wrote to at least one lawmaker, Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., and told him he could keep tribal donations. “The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has voluntarily contributed to political campaigns and causes along the ideological spectrum for more than a decade,” Martin said in his Dec. 21 letter. “Our decisions on political contributions were made by us. They were not coerced or controlled by our former lobbyist, Mr. Jack Abramoff, with whom we have severed all our ties.”
