But the ‘McNasty’ nickname is well known. This is a pro McCain source.

McCain is a member of the Alfalfa Club, an exclusive Washington, D.C. club for the rich and powerful, founded in 1913. Its sole purpose is to hold an annual banquet each January to honor the birthday of General Robert E. Lee. There are approximately 200 members.
Actually, he was called “John Wayne” by his friends at the Academy, but it doesn’t matter. His family is from Mississippi (still owns the property) so his membership in the exclusive Alfalfa club isn’t surprising, but it’s probably not a well known fact either.
