The U.S. Strategic Command last year held one of its largest major exercises simulating a nuclear attack on the United States and a counterstrike involving bombers, ground-based missiles and submarine-launched missiles. Air Force Gen. Kevin Chilton last week told the House Armed Services subcommittee that the exercise was the most extensive nuclear command, control and communications field exercise in over a decade.
It demonstrated the full range of nuclear deterrence capabilities by integrating submarine strategic deterrent patrols, more than 90 aircraft sorties, an ICBM test launch, and five days of continuous airborne command-and-control operations, he said.
The exercise, held from June 24 to June 30, was designed to test the readiness of nuclear forces.
The U.S. nuclear force is facing a major cutback under the Obama administration, which has concluded an arms agreement with Russia that if ratified by the Senate will sharply reduce the number of nuclear missiles to around 1,300 to 1,600.
Nuclear forces had been stressed by funding cuts and a lack of focus under the Bush administration. A blue-ribbon panel recommended major funding increases to upgrade the arsenal, including its communications networks, weapons systems and infrastructure.
Chilton noted that with the exception of the U.S., all nuclear weapon states continue to modernize their nuclear weapon stockpiles and in some cases grow them further.
Although the U.S. and Russia are reducing their strategic arsenals, North Korea and Iran remain on a dangerous nuclear path, he told the hearing.
Lt. Gen. Frank G. Klotz, commander of the Air Force Strike Command, said the land-based long-range Minuteman III missile forces, deployed in 450 locations, is the most responsive to national leadership.
The size and characteristics of the overall Minuteman III force presents any potential adversary with an almost insurmountable challenge should they contemplate attacking the United States,

It’s OK 0 just announced he will never use nukes - under any circumstances (against Islam).

I’ve noticed son that you always post these awesome articles pretty late at night, when nobody is around to read them.
Thats to bad.
Do you have a ping list by the ways?...
That means our enemies will love us and never use nukes against us...right?? /SARC/ I mean once will elected obama the world loves us and we are all joining hands and singing kumbaya......Wait a minute...That’s right that was more liberal BS.....Only happens in lib fairytale land where Obamacare works and we live in a Commie Utopia....
...hussein....
Did the exercise include Divsions of troops Mirandizing the perps? And Battalions of para-attorneys being dropped in to provide defense?
How can this happen under our first post-American “gay” president?
Maybe they were nuking “breeders.”
Why bother with the counterstrike exercise, when 0-bomb-a has just announced he won’t do so?
Late at night? I just awoke from my afternoon nap.
‘The size and characteristics of the overall Minuteman III force presents any potential adversary with an almost insurmountable challenge should they contemplate attacking the United States,’
That’s the US today.. ‘Almost’ good enough. Yeah right.
WOW! This guy is out to destroy the country!
Reagan must be crying right now. Obama is worse than Jimmy Carter.
Sheesh. That IS Bush's fault.
POLO HAT is a end-to-end communications exercise.
GLOBAL SHIELD was the name of the full-blown nuclear exercises. I do not know if they use that name now or not.
There are about 2,260 “vital” Russian targets on the list today, divided into the four traditional categories nuclear (1,100), conventional (500), leadership (160), and war-supporting industry (500).This is tantamount to requiring our strategic forces to be able to destroy 80% of the 2,260 Russian targets, which in turn requires the ability to deliver approximately 1,800 warheads to their targets.
It is no accident that we have about 2,300 strategic missile warheads on launch-ready alert at this very moment (98% of the Minuteman III and Peacekeeper land-based force on 2-minute launch readiness plus 4 Trident submarines, two in the Atlantic and two in the Pacific, on 15-minute launch readiness
In my last Polo Hat...mind you, MANY years ago...in additional to all the airborne comms (MEECN) and ERCS, they sent both a land-based and sea-based ICBM up.
We HEARD they also sent a bunch of bombers up.
Darn, I miss the good 'ol days:)
The Peacekeeper, was probably the greatest ICBM technologically wise. The Peacekeeper rockets are being converted to the satellite launcher role by Orbital Sciences, as the OSP-2 Minotaur IV SLV, while their warheads will be deployed on the existing Minuteman III missiles
I took part in the first Global Shield in 78 I believe as a Minot Missileer, when we came back to base we went out to the flightline and watched a full B52/KC135/EC135 MITO launch closeup which was impressive. I did a number of Looking Glass Global Shield and Polo Hats up to the early 90s. We were ready then at an instant. It appears that we’re not so much anymore.
