Pro-Abortion Nun at Catholic University of Detroit Mercy
TFP Student Action ^ | 04-14-10 | TFP Student Action

Latest discovery: University board member supports abortion

At least 11,000 students and concerned parents have petitioned the Catholic University of Detroit Mercy to remove links to abortion promoters from its web site. So far the request has not been granted. Links to Planned Parenthood and the National Organization for Women (NOW) are still listed in two places: “career & professional resources” and “external sites of interest.”

TFP Student Action will continue its peaceful protest.

The average internet savvy webmaster could remove these pro-abortion links with ease in less than five minutes. Yet this Jesuit-Mercy university has not removed them so far, thus giving scandal to students who are faithful to Catholic teaching on abortion. The university’s seeming unwillingness to remove these links might be related to another troubling discovery.

Wolf in Nun's Habit?

Sister Margaret A. Farley, RSM is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Detroit Mercy. Over the years, she has taken positions favorable to abortion, same-sex “marriage,” sterilization of women, divorce and the ordination of women to the priesthood. Sister Farley, who taught Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School, is well known for her radical feminist ideas and open dissent from Church teaching.

In 1984 she co-signed an ad in The New York Times by Catholics for Free Choice challenging Catholic teaching on procured abortion. “Statements of recent Popes and of the Catholic hierarchy have condemned the direct termination of pre-natal life as morally wrong in all instances. There is a mistaken belief in American society that this is the only legitimate Catholic position,” reads part of the statement. Another co-signer of the ad is long-time Detroit Mercy faculty member Prof. Jane Schaberg, author of the blasphemous book, The Illegitimacy of Jesus.

Although the Vatican and the American Catholic Bishops called the signers of the ad on the carpet urging them to recant, the warning seems to have made no lasting impression on Sister Farley or Prof. Schaberg who continue to promote abortion and unorthodox ideas.

More Reasons to Pray & Protest

Sister Farley, for example, wrote Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics. Published in 2006, the book distorts Catholic moral teaching beyond recognition, presenting sins against nature in a positive light. And yet she is listed as a member of the Board of Trustees at the Catholic University of Detroit Mercy. (See listing here)

What type of faith-damaging message does this send to Catholic college students? How can we expect the next generation to respect innocent life when professors like Dr. Jane Schaberg and board members like Sister Farley publicly reject Church teaching and Natural Law on procured abortion?

Remove Dissident Nun

TFP Student Action invites its members – students and parents – to respectfully speak out against this scandal, to be the voice of the unborn that clamor for justice, and oppose the sin of abortion. Let us continue politely urging the University of Detroit Mercy to remove its web site links to abortion promoters.

And as we renew and intensify this peaceful protest, let us also ask for the removal of pro-abortion Sister Margaret A. Farley from the university's Board of Trustees.

Please note: Always be respectful and polite when contacting members of the hierarchy.

There are quite a few leftist whack-job feminist nuns out there who openly break with Church teaching. For some reason the Church seems unwilling to rock the boat though. Probably because so damned few women want to be nuns these days they’ll take absolutely anybody.

As my mother told me after she had many conversations with such nuns....”I’ve concluded that a lifetime of celebacy is not conducive to sound mental health for the average female”.

it’;s time for the church to get back to being catholic , the left have infiltrated the church, public schools and now trying to get into the military .

Any priest or nun goes against the teaching of their faith or does not talk about their faith like traditional marriage needs to be called to Rome and then take it form there

The duplicity of a pro-abortion nun is that she has already been born, and I bet she really believes in “fairness” too.

Abortion is not anathema to Catholics.

My understanding is that aabortion is acceptable -- in Catholic hospitals -- if a pregancy threatens death for BOTH Mother and Child.

She is even more evil than ANY secular leftist.

She actually took a lifelong vow in order to spread evil in the world. NOW THAT’S EVIL!

This thing should be burned at the stake. It’s remains tossed into a sewer.

“so damned few women want to be nuns these days they’ll take absolutely anybody.”

No, they’re still picky. They do a whole psychological work-up and interviews and such.

The orders which are growing and attracting young people are conservative. It’s the old nuns, left over from the 1970s, who are the bitter feminists, and should leave the church, but then they’d need to support themselves.

Well, she’s not Catholic. You can’t be Catholic and pro abortion. Period.

If you want to study a part of the Catholic Church that has lost direction and focus, The Arch Diocese of Detroit is a great study.

The Obama administration could LEARN from the obfuscation, misdirection and lack of leadership.

Go to the newest Cathedral and try to find the Eucharist.

Just saying.

Has nothing to do with celebasy and everything to do with being a liberal.

"Liberalism is a mental disease."

This is America, not mesopotamia. The particular demon(s) that like "human sacrifice" went by the name "Huitzilopochtli" here. Now, I think it prefers the name "Convenience".

But a demon by any other name is as foul.

"...so damned few women want to be nuns these days"

Actually, it's "so many damned women took over the old nunneries"... or "damned nuns repel good women who'd want to be good nuns"... or "damnable nuns want damnable things"... or ... something like that...

The only optimistic aspect is, the polymorphous polyester pantsuit set are mostly 70+ and have no successors.

Sigh.

Here's something that restores my soul: the young, thriving, Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia. A.k.a the Catholic wing of the Catholic Church.

Tell these ladies that nobody wants to be a nun these days. Or these. Or check this out.

Just for 3 examples.

Thanks. I'm sick of hearing this "nobody wants to be a nun" etc. garbage.

Nobody wants to be a nun in a whackdoodle new-age leftist lesbian order. That's for sure.

And I wish more ladies answered the call to religious life ... and more gentlemen answered the call to the priesthood or religious life, but the number of those who do is definitely not zero.

That is NOT my understanding. If there is a question, the child is delivered and Baptized.

Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives (Link) forbid directly intended abortion

However, therapeutic treatments necessary to prevent the death of the mother are allowed, even if they result in the unintended death of the child. Examples would be: hysterectomy for uterine cancer, radiation/chemo for cancer, even if the mother is pregnant, as long as they do not constitute a direct attack on the child.

The bottom line is, if it is impossible to save the child, the doctor is acting rightly if he goes ahead to focus exclusively on treating the mother's disease, accepting the sad fact that the death of the child was in any case inevitable.
