NY Times: Poll Finds Tea Party Anger Rooted in Issues of Class
NY Times ^ | April 14, 2010 | By KATE ZERNIKE and MEGAN THEE-BRENAN

Tea party supporters are wealthier and more well-educated than the general public, tend to be Republican, white, male, and married, and their strong opposition to the Obama administration is more rooted in political ideology than anxiety about their personal economic situation, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The 18 percent of Americans who identify themselves as Tea Party supporters look like Republicans in many ways, but they hold more conservative views on a range of issues and tend to be older than Republicans generally. They are also more likely than Republicans as a whole to describe themselves as “very conservative” and President Obama as “very liberal.”

And while most Republicans say they are “dissatisfied” with Washington, Tea Party supporters are more likely to classify themselves as “angry.”

Speculation and anecdotal evidence have often taken the place of concrete data about who supports the Tea Party movement, and the poll offers some surprising findings.

Their fierce animosity toward Washington, and the president in particular, is rooted in deep pessimism about the direction of the country and the conviction that the policies of the Obama administration are disproportionately directed at helping the poor rather than the middle class or the rich.

The overwhelming majority of Tea Party supporters say Mr. Obama does not share the values most Americans live by, and that he does not understand the problems of people like themselves.

My government is stealing from me. I want it to end. And then I want retribution.

Could it be that most of the rallies have been during the week so mostly retired folks attend?

We are angry because Congress is ignoring the will of the people and destroying our country by spending us into oblivion. Nobody wanted the stimulus bill and they passed it anyway. Majority against health care take over and they pass it anyway.

MSM, especially the NY TImes, don’t have a clue about the tea party. Yahoo article today was surprised that the movement started with Rick Santelli and not Sarah Palin. Clueless.

I thought Kate Zernike and Megan Thee-Brenan were gay, not that they were pedophiles. I guess they could be both!

Yeah. It's not very complicated. Either they're completely oblivious, or they're liars. Neither option is attractive.

That's why I'm glad Sarah P. is attacking the media, straight up. Let's face it, their M.O. is direct, frontal assault. Trying to "play nice" is pointless, and a recipe for defeat. They've made it a fight, so we have to fight back. The weapon we have is ridicule --and there's plenty there to work with.

It would be great if the rest of the R's stepped up. It might cow the cowards, because that's what most of the leftist media is, cowards.

The NYT can't seem to keep their story straight. I thought we were all racist, homophobic, inbred biblethumpers.

The NYT never “noticed” that the environmental movement is nearly 100% white, and come from upper middle class white families. They also never noticed that the student enviro-wackos have never worked a day in their lives, nor paid taxes, nor contributed in any meaningful way to the economy.

That’s the talking point when their audience consists of the librul ideologues with at least a college degree.

This “richer, more educated” talking point is intended to be delivered to the class warfare crowd.

"...the conviction that the policies of the Obama administration are disproportionately directed at helping the poor rather than the middle class or the rich...."

They have this completely wrong. People who subscribe to the tenets of the Tea Party feel that the policies of this administration are going to HURT the poor AND the middle class AND the "rich" (whatever the hell "rich" means now).

Most people opposed to profligate spending and excessive taxation (Tea Party tenets) realize that those actions by the government will negatively impact the poor simply because of the impact they have on everyone else.

heh. ain't it amazing how the NY SLIMES comes out with this the day before Tea Party activism again?

How about THIS for a "Hussein Cultist Poll":

Poll Finds Hussein Cultist Devotion Rooted in Issue of Class

Hussein cultists are poorer and more less-educated than the general public, tend to be Democrat, black, female, and single, and their strong devotion to Hussein is more rooted in fantasy and race than about political ideology or any amount of critical thinking, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
