Airline passengers are facing massive disruption across the UK after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded planes.

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday to 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.

Airports operator BAA confirmed all flights at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick would be suspended from midday.

And in Scotland, authorities have already shut all their airports.

The restrictions, in accordance with international civil aviation policy, were imposed after the Met Office warned ash could clog engines.

Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.

A work colleague of mine said that her sons flight from Liverpool had been cancelled, so the ash seems to be streaming southwards. Apparently it will be nationwide by the weekend.

Previous icelandic eruptions have caused things like “the year without a summer” and the very cold winters around revolutionary times.

Imagine such a freeze now ruining the crops our mid-country farms. Back in revolutionary times and in the year w/o summer, we (and the rest of the world) were not so dependent on the supplies of our farm belt. In fact, we hardly had a footprint in that area.

So if the neighboring Katja volcano blows too, it could be pretty devastating.

We might not be able to eat, but at least we’d have healthcare.

In Internet Explorer right click over the pic you want and click on “Save Picture as” to wherever you prefer to save pictures. Could just be in “My Pictures”. Next right click anywhere on your desktop where there aren’t icons. Click “Properties” Go to the “Desktop” tab. Click “Browse”. Click on the picture you want then click “Open.” Next click “Apply” and you should have new desktop wallpaper being this picture.
