She fiddled while we burned (the problem with having a 'First female...' just for the symbolism

HRISTINE Nixon is under severe pressure to quit after being forced to admit she had a haircut and spent time with her biographer as Black Saturday unfolded.

Ms Nixon remained defiant, saying she had never considered quitting her role as head of the bushfire reconstruction authority.

But the Herald Sun reveals that privately Premier John Brumby's support for the former police chief commissioner is wavering.

"The Premier will await the findings of the royal commission before making judgments about arrangements into the future," a spokesman for Mr Brumby said.

Insiders said he was leaving the door open on her future.

The latest damaging admissions come after Ms Nixon was recalled to the bushfires royal commission following revelations by the Herald Sun she left the fire control centre to have a pub dinner.

Friday's press conference was hastily arranged after the Herald Sun raised questions about how much time Ms Nixon spent on her memoirs during Black Saturday.

It is believed she first briefed the Premier, who had no knowledge of the hair appointment or the meeting with her biographer.

"On the morning of February 7th at 9.30am I had a haircut," she said.

On February 7th last year - the day that the worst natural disaster in Australia's history occurred - Christine Nixon was Chief Commissioner of the Victorian Police Force, a role she had held for six years, and would relinquish three weeks later. When she was appointed in 2001, she was the first woman appointed to head a police force in Australia leapfrogging a number of more senior officers to be appointed. She was appointed because the socialist state government decided it was time for a woman - and she was a disaster. Crime figures soared, discipline standards in the force dropped, under her new, soft, approach to policing.

But on February 7th, last year, she was in charge under law of Victoria's disaster response. And on a day that was predicted to be (the state Premier had gone on television the previous day to warn people explicitly) the worst day for bushfire danger in this state's history - she spent the morning at the hairdressers and talking to her official biographer.

Then she went to work at the disaster headquarters. And that evening, after being told there were confirmed deaths in the bushfires, that whole towns had been razed, that people were still dying, and the death toll would rise - she went out to a pub to have dinner with friends.

There are plenty of competent women out there capable of serving in any role. But a woman should only ever be appointed if she is the best person for the job - not just because she looks good symbolically.

Since stepping down as Chief Commissioner, she has headed the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority. She does seem to be doing a decent job there, mainly because most a large part of her role is what she is good at - being nice and making people feel better. It's just a pity that heading a Police Force requires a lot more than that. And leading a state during a disaster is very different from comforting people after it's all over.

No - but it certainly can apply in any case where a person from a minority group rises to any high position. A lot of people I know considered Obama's race in voting for him, because they were worried it would be racist not to, or it would symbolise that America had moved beyond race...

No - by all means, elect or appoint a black man, or a woman, or a homosexual, or anybody else, IF they have managed to convince you they are the best choice available. But don't do it for any other reason.

Margaret Thatcher was a great leader - and that had nothing to do with her sex.

To add to that - Australia has had two Jewish Governors-General and 90% of Australians aren’t even aware they were Jewish (depsite their names being Sir Isaac Isaacs, and Sir Zelman Cowen). Why - because their religious and racial background was irrelevant to why they were appointed and whether they could do the job (they were both appointed because they were eminent Constitutional scholars - one was Chief Justice of the High Court, the other headed a university as a Professor of Law).

Bill Clinton was hell bent on having the first female Attorney General. After his third try, we ended up with this sock puppet.

Of course the man behind the scenes, Eric Holder, is now the real AG.

when unqualified people are placed into positions they shouldn’t be, everyone suffers.

I think you may have missed my humor - but anyway
Anyone who voted for Obama hoping to escape and/or undo ‘being a racist’ IS STILL A RACIST! Racism exists between your ears, and cannot be changed by a guilt driven act! Racism, on a personal level, can only be address by personal honest, and recognizing the culture that may have subtly or overtly coerces you into racist feeling and/or behavior. The first step is to be brutally honest with yourself, then accept yourself, the forgive yourself, then be self actuating, and go forward racist free - knowing that feelings change over time, but only with self-acceptance and the will to actively engage your feelings in the direction that you freely choose. IMHO

Same goes for a man in fact. The truth is that our history is full of Incompetent Men in all fields, far more than incompetent women.
