[South Texas:]Sheriff: Man stabbed to death defending daughter at baptism party

NEAR EDINBURG — A 34-year-old man died from 11 stab wounds at an Edinburg hospital Monday morning, deputies said.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies responded to Edinburg Regional Medical Center, where a doctor said LeeRoy Berrones, 34, arrived at the hospital and seemed to be "highly intoxicated and unresponsive to questions," Sheriff Lupe Treviño wrote in a statement.

Doctors removed Berrones' shirt and found nine stab wounds on the left side of his rib cage, one in his chest and another on his left arm. During emergency surgery, doctors learned Berrones' heart had been punctured and he was bleeding internally.

Berrones died during surgery.

The doctor went to meet with Cristina Berrones, the woman who brought LeeRoy to the hospital, but she and another man had already left.

Berrones' 20-year-old daughter arrived later and said she had been at her cousin's baptism party at 2003 E. Alberta Road earlier that night.

The woman told deputies a man at the party was bothering her and that her father — Berrones — told him to stop. The man became angry and began to assault Berrones, deputies said.

Berrones' daughter tried to stop the man from assaulting her father, but she was pushed to the ground, deputies said.

Berrones was then stabbed 11 times by the man, deputies said, while another held him on the ground.

Through corroborating statements and a photo lineup, investigators implicated Jorge Armando Romero Martinez, 27, and Jesus Torres, 28, in Berrones' murder.

Torres allegedly held Berrones to the ground while Martinez allegedly stabbed him during the argument. Warrants have been issued for both men, who face murder charges.

Berrones is a documented Valluco gang member, the sheriff said. Martinez and Torres illegal immigrants and Texas Syndicate gang members, he said.

The gang ties do not appear to have motivated the alleged murder, Treviño said.

Are baptisms normal occasions in which to become stinking drunk?

Only if it's an Irish baptism.

Seriously though the article said he appeared to be drunk. Massive loss of blood can certainly be mistaken, at least initially, for drunkenness.

Mexicans hold huge parties, often with considerable alcohol, for events such as Baptisms, presentations, and little children’s birthday parties. Generally the ostensible occasions of the fiesta (the little kids) are in bed before the event gets too raucous.

He’s 34 and has a 20 yo daughter?

Hmm... sure gang ties weren’t involved. A man held him down so another man could stab him 11 times.

Things are deteriorating when gang members stab each other at Baptisms...what happened to the good old days...Don Corleone would never have allowed this to happen at a Mafia Baptism party!

Give them a choice: The chair or Mexico. If they choose Mexico and are subsequently found to have returned to this country, they don’t get a second chance. They go to the chair.

Win-win for law-abiding citizens: one bad guy dead, two bad guys heading for the slammer.

Give them a choice, the chair or Mexico. If they choose Mexico then shoot them before they cross the border. Don't give them a second chance to attack us.

These criminals have proven that they have no right to live. (BTW, I include ALL illegal invaders in "these criminals". If we killed a few thousand of them the rest would scurry back south like the cockroaches they have become)

This is outrageous. He has 11 stab wounds, one to the heart, and they claim he ‘seemed’ intoxicated!!! They opened his shirt and found 9 wounds, what, they couldn’t tell he had wounds from all the blood???????? Sumthin’s not right here...

You'd think they'd at least notice the puddle. Also, the guys who took him to the hospital immediately left?

Must have been in a hurry to pick up more tequila for the party before things got out of hand.
