Arab Refugees: The Real Story
The Jewish Press ^ | Apr 14 2010 | Abba Eban

The Arab refugee problem was caused by a war of aggression, launched by the Arab states against Israel in 1947 and 1948. Let there be no mistake. If there had been no war against Israel, with its consequent harvest of bloodshed, misery, panic and flight, there would be no problem of Arab refugees today.

"The speech makes for remarkable reading, as it was written and delivered just ten years after Israel's founding. The events described were still fresh in people's minds; the historical distortions popularized by the ensuing decades' relentless drumbeat of anti-Israel propaganda had yet to gain traction."

Excellent factual review! Sheds light on the obfuscation of truth.

“Sheds light on the obfuscation of truth.”

It’s a fair bet that our inexperienced president knows nothing of this history. If he does, his shabby treatment of Netanyahu is even more contemptible.

I am pro-Israel. But let’s be honest. Mistakes were made. When the socialists in the US and Europe set up the state of Israel, they used EMINENT DOMAIN to seize the private property of Arabs (both Christian Arabs and Muslim Arabs) and transfer that private property to socialist government ownership.

That legitimate grievance of the Arabs was then mixed with differences over religion, etc to escalate the problems.

Consider what might have happened if instead of the socialist central planners unilaterally seizing private property, a plan had been developed to facilitate the new Jewish immigrants negotiating with the Arab landowners to purchase the land at a price agreed to between the individuals involved?

There problems and friction would have been much less and not escalated to war.

Israel is another example of how socialist central planners have unintended consequences.

Barack Obama wants Israel to go back to the 1967 borders and give up Jerusalem. He wants to destroy Israel.

Where do you get this information? And who were these socialists? And how did they accomplish this? Before the Holocaust when the British White Paper slammed the gates shut to Jewish immigration and condemned Europes Jews to the gas chambers? Prior to establishment of the state when the British still controlled the area?

“That legitimate grievance of the Arabs was then mixed with differences over religion, etc to escalate the problems.”

Again, we’ll have to agree to disagree. Legitimate grievances are resolved in a court of law, not by a war of extermination. Moreover, shall we discuss the rights of Jews who were forced out of Arab countries that they and their ancestors had lived in for thousands of years? Mistakes were made? OK. But let’s look at all the mistakes and all those who made them.

“Consider what might have happened if instead of the socialist central planners unilaterally seizing private property, a plan had been developed to facilitate the new Jewish immigrants negotiating with the Arab landowners to purchase the land at a price agreed to between the individuals involved?”

I believe that, at best and assuming you are 100% truthful, you are only looking at a small part of the picture. Frankly, I’m unconvinced this happened before 1948. If it happened AFTER the State of Israel was declared; AFTER the Arab armies invaded with their war of extermination; AFTER “some” Arab residents of the area fled in anticipation of returning and taking the property of the Jews after they were exterminated by the Arab armies, then I can see your point.

“There problems and friction would have been much less and not escalated to war.”

So the Arab complicity in the Holocaust, terrorism against Jews in the pre-State, and the war of extermination had nothing to do with it?

“Israel is another example of how socialist central planners have unintended consequences.”

Still waiting to see your “pro-Israel” bona-fides.
