Statement by the Press Secretary on the Three American Hikers Detained in Iran
White House Website ^ | April 23 | Staff

Posted on 04/25/2010 7:00:16 AM PDT by PghBaldy

The United States remains deeply concerned by the case of three American hikers, Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal, and Sarah Shourd, who have been detained in Iran without charge or access to legal representation since July 2009. While we welcome the decision by the Iranian authorities to allow Shane, Sarah and Josh to receive another Swiss consular visit at long last, we were deeply alarmed to learn from the families today of their physical and emotional state of health. We fear their well-being will suffer even more unless their case is resolved without delay. We strongly believe these urgent developments are additional reasons for the government of Iran to release them immediately.

These three innocent Americans have been in detention in Iran for almost nine months without formal charges or access to legal representation as stipulated in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. There is absolutely no justification for their detention, and they should be released without further delay.

As always, we urgently call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to resolve the cases of all missing and detained American citizens in Iran, including Robert Levinson who has been missing in Iran since March 2007.

Note the mention of Robert Levinson at the end, almost as an afterthought. Note also the use of the given names of the three hikers. While we welcome the decision by the Iranian authorities to allow Shane, Sarah,. and Josh to receive another Swiss consular visit at long last

Yeah, Obama is deeply concerned about these imprisoned Americans. He’s practically tearing his hair out.

At least Jimmy Carter actually got upset when this kind of thing happened.

I might add that the press wouldn’t let Carter off the hook. But when something inconvenient happens to The One, they just plain ignore it.

How much have we heard about this illegal detainment of American citizens from our wonderful press? Not a whole lot.

I have always had problems with this narrative.

What kind of fool goes for a “hike” along the Iran-Iraq border?

This time the Iranian assertion seems the most plausible.

On the other hand, who would employ such amateurs?

This story smells.

Carter was a white and a Southerner who quoted the Bible. The secular “progressive” media have been inculturated to hate all three of those characteristics wherever they find them. Obama is none of these.

Obama is an out and out enemy of his country, an insider of the post Soviet Communist network hellbent on fanning the flames of Koranic Islamic hate in hopes of tearing down the U.S. and her allies “with firing a shot.”

The big bonus to the communists (yes communists), who use the retort “racism” as their response to any and all criticism, is Obama’s skin tone, his ability to articulate his words well in the English language with a staccato phrased rhythem reminiscent of national TV announcer David Brinkley, and Obama’s puffed up. superficial, narcissistic, detached personality and lack of reflection, and his lack of anything but a superficial, parroting understanding of any subject.

I agree.

It is their stupidity and not mine.

Useful idiots abound, convinced they can be the catalysts for peace on earth and that their very peacefulness will keep them out of danger. Daniel Pearl, even with his press credentials, was such a person. Rachel Corrie, who idiodically placed herself or was placed smack in the middle of Palestinian Islamic terrorist group assuming she was invincibled, was another.

My husband knows Josh Fattal’s uncle. The three hikers were all from Berkeley and were in Iraq, sort of discovering their roots. They are of Iraqi Jewish descent. The conditions that they are being held under are very, very bad, and our government has done little to help secure their release. As far as I can see, FOX news has been the only station covering this tragedy.

I suppose.

Darwin would have no problem with this.

They hikers were all college students, who were in Iraq to sort of discover their roots. Their families were Iraqi Jews. The area where they were hiking was mountainous and the border weaved in and out of the mountains. They were foolish and took unnecessary risks, but knowing the uncle of Josh Fattah is a rabid environmental lobbyist, I cannot believe that the boy was working as a spy for the government.

Thanks for the info. The lack of press coverage is shocking (where is the liberal outrage?).

It takes a Swiss diplomat’s visit to the three hikers to extract a mention of them from the WH & State Dept, and it takes a statement from the WH & State Dept to get the incident any coverage by the press.

Google the incident....virtual crickets.

“Thursday marked the third Swiss consular visit to the American detainees, Crowley said. The last meeting was on October 29.”

Jews thrown into a Muslim prison. That sounds like discovering their roots alright.

My daughter was learning about Carter in Georgia Histories class and started reading about him online. She read about Iran and the hostage situation. She expressed an awe to Ronald Reagan when finding out just how fast they released the hostages once he became elected.

It’s the same mindset that she adores (and my youngest has expressed similar admiration for the characteristics) in the Hank Hill character on King of the Hill. She is 14, so she sees things through that eyeset, and she has said Hank reminds her of her dad (my husband is kind of like him, LOL) in that he is somewhat nerdy in his need to do things by the book, honor the flag, pride in his state (ours is Georgia and we feel as prideful as Texans) and yet there will reach a point when... he will kick your ass. LOL!

HA! Of course I suppose it’s a matter of “right” because I’ll bet some loony Los Angeles lib would claim I was abusing them or something. But as my 14 year old said about her dad (when all this was coming out, comparison to Hank Hill, etc...) that it’s good to know that Daddy’s a good man. But it’s better to know he makes you safe too.

P.S. speaking of Georgia and Texas-did you know that it was a Georgia girl made the Lone Star that eventually became the Texas state flag?

Some of her descendants still live here in Knoxville.

That is very cool! Georgia and Texas are very similar I think. Very independant for one thing.
