Another reason to avoid Manhattan... They are going to watch you like a hawk.
And, the cameras will be used for everything including speeding violations, red light violations, and congestion pricing/tolling. Taxes, taxes, and more taxes will come from these cameras.

Makes sense. Not only did the existing cameras fail to prevent the SUV from burning, they also lead investigators in the wrong direction - looking for a balding white guy.
Think how much safer we’d be with 100,000 more cameras!

Just like the UK.
Maybe they will get the ones that talk to you.

The article suggests some of the ways such a surveillance system could increase security—for example by checking license plates. Possibly that could be automated, and set to notify authorities if a listed plate entered the city.
But otherwise, such a system would need smart people viewing those cameras, and I don’t see how they could possibly do that over large areas of the city as opposed to sensitive places like the stock exchange.
In the case of the Times Square bomber, surveillance cameras picked up information that could be used after the fact—possibly. Although the vehicle registration number appears to have been the key bit of information, and that was gotten off of the engine and axle.
But there was no way more cameras could have prevented the bombing, if the bomber hadn’t messed up. There was no reason to be suspicious until the smoke appeared.

Instead of stopping the never ending conga line of dangerous, questionable Mid Eastern immigrants, they’re going to put American citizens under total surveillance.

Studies have shown that a person can only watch six cameras at once. More then that and they see nothing after just 20 minutes. What we really want to know is how someone could find a parking place in Times Square. Answer that and you can ex plane why a camera would prevent anything. From what I have seen they display baldness and hair parts badly.

What an evil waste. They won’t prevent anything. They didn’t prevent this incident, or the bombings in the UK or Spain.

Baghdad comes to NYC. How's that hopey-changey thing working out obama? Hmmm? 4 terrorist attacks attempted or completed in your first year or so. I'd say on the National Security front you're a complete disaster. Then again, I'd say that about you on any issue. At least you're consistently in over your head. That begs the question, just what are you good at obama, really? Do you have any marketable skills other than speaking and lying?

so sensitive that it will pick up even suspicious behavior?
Does that mean the cameras will have automatic exposure value compensation so they will get a properly developed picture of white males upset with the HELLthcontrol Bill in all lighting conditions and backgrounds?

Those that give up a little freedom for a little security have neither freedom nor security.........
Can't remember who said it, but my history teachers drilled this into our skulls more than 60 years ago--and I've never forgotten it.

"New York officials say they could stop attacks like the attempted Times Square car bomb by expanding a controversial surveillance system so sensitive that it will pick up even suspicious behavior."And how exactly do they think that would work?
Do they have some predictive behavior software?
Or would they be doing some "profiling," and stopping and searching suspicious conservative white tea-party-activist males like the one who planted the bomb in Times Square?

Flood the nation with criminals of every ilk, illegal aliens, hateful muslims, wait for the fireworks, then set up your police state to “maintain civic order”. This has been in the works for many decades.

How will cameras PREVENT attacks? Photos/Movies used as evidence after the fact, yes. But they won’t stop anything.
