Pet Owners With Barking Dogs Could Face $100 Fine [Los Angeles]
CBS2 ^ | May 5, 2010 | Serene Branson

...Man's best friend can be your worst enemy when you live next to a dog that never quits barking. And dogs running loose can be a neighborhood menace. Now, the Los Angeles city council is cracking down on dog owners who don't control their animals.

It's a common sound on New Hampshire Avenue in L.A.'s Los Feliz neighborhood – that's because you'll find plenty of pooches.

But according to a new city ordinance, pet owners may have to pay up if they don't keep their dogs quieted down.

Mary Yerkatyan doesn't have dogs but her neighbors do.

"I think people definitely have the rights to have their dogs but you know to a point, it can get disturbing at night or sometimes when they are away on vacations," she said.

The ordinance bars owners from allowing dogs to "make noise which is unreasonably annoying disturbing offensive or unreasonably interferes with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property."

Turn the dogs into lunchmeat - followed by their owners. Problem solved.

Great idea, but double it with each infraction.

LAPD won’t even show up for an accident unless there’s an injury.

No way they’ll be able to enforce this.

I also told my gardner to ignore the leaf-blower law and that I’ll pay any ticket.

That was 5-years ago...

If someone shoots the owner of a non stop barking dog, well, I’ll never testify against them. I saw nothing.

I had an a$$hole neighbor with two rottweilers that barked all the time. He worked nights and came home about 3 am. No amount of complaining to him or the authorities did any good.

So every morning at 6:30 am I spent 1/2 hour with my leaf blower cleaning my driveway, very meticulously. Tit for Tat. Sometimes yard work is actually pleasurable.

that is hilarious!

I too had neighbors with a big lab (and I LOVE labs) which would stand under my window at night and bark and bark.
THey wouldn’t do a damned thing. They never heard it because their BR was on the other end of the house. Finally after many complaints from me, they took the dog to live with their parents on a lake.
Then about a year later this same couple got into a HUGE fight with their neighbors (on their bedroom side) who had a dog which stood under the window and howled all night.
I loved it, especially since I was no longer living there.

Ya...but you have really experienced hell on earth when the neighbor on the short side of your property leaves his Dalmation parked in the adjacent yard to ROH ROH ROH...ROH ROH ROH for day after day, hour upon ungodly hour.

It took two solid months of calls to animal control to get them to move that mutt to the other side of the property. I guess the other neighbor couldn't take it either and they finally got rid of it.

Good riddance. What is WRONG with these people??

I’d sure like to know!
We keep our BIG dogs indoors at night.
I don’t want them pissing off the neighbors and getting shot. THey sleep soundly indoors.

I moved from the farm to Colorado Springs in 86. The first barking dog was startling, no one would ever be so rude where I came from.

So, I did the neighborly thing and went over to talk to them about it. Man, I got an earful.

It didn’t take long to realize I wasn’t on the farm anymore. I finally figured out that I needed to talk to animal control, so I did. They were pretty much on the ball, and after a few days the problem was gone.

We moved a few times, and after realizing that people with barking dogs are bitches themselves, I never hesitated to call animal control.

When there is a barking dog, someones going to be pissed. I decided that wasn’t going to be me.

My daughter has a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Beautiful dog. She tried something unusual. She trained him. She spends (a lot of) time with him. She loves him and is responsible for him.

When she first got him she went next door to her neighbor and asked him to let her know if he barked when she was not there. The neighbors like her and her dog.

The thing that has always puzzled me about dog owners that leave their dogs unattended and barking all the time, is why did they get a dog in the first place? If you don’t want to spend time with them, why get them? It’s not like people are being forced to buy dogs against their will.

Yeah, it’s not like you are going to miss the friendship of anyone that inconsiderate.

I had the city come out and give the word to a neighbor whose little yapper was out in the yard all day barking non stop. She had one of those invisible fences and apparently thinks that’s all she is responsible for. After my wife and I asked her repeatedly to be responsible to no avail I got the city on her. Lo and behold, several other neighbors thanked me, said the noise was really annoying. But no one wanted to offend her (huh?) by telling her to shut it up.

Here’s the real kicker. First time I went over and spoke to her about it, she looked at me and said (with a straight face) “well, he only barks when he’s outside”. I knew then reasoning with her was impossible. Thick as a bloody brick.

I have 2 VERY SPOILED golden retrievers.
I am blessed to be able to work at home and spend a LOT of time with them. THey stay indoors with me all day, going out only for walks with me and some play time with me in the yard.

My neighbors actually love my dogs. But I agree with what your daughter did 100%. If my situation were different and my dogs were outside all day, I would do the same thing.

We had a black lab for years which stayed in the backyard during the day. All the neighbors would check on her and give her attention. She was a sweetheart. Kept her inside at night. That is what a laundry room is for!

Actually he stays in the house during the day. She takes him for a mile walk in the morning before she leaves. Comes home every day at 4:30 and immediately lets him in the back yard. Then she takes him for another 1-2 mile walk.

In addition to being in a hiking group where they do 5 mile walks in the evening. Plus she is a runner and Ridgies like to run...a lot. In the winter he does 5+ mile runs several times a week and loves it. Getting too warm now for him to run like that.

Point is, dogs need time, exercise and love. And a lot of them aren't getting it.
