“...rebuilding responsibility” It is amazing to me the dramatically different meaning that phrase has to people on the Right from those on the Left.

His first words should be: Let’s retrun to thatcherism. I’ve listened to that man enough to know he’s a rank socialist.

Cameron is a classy gentleman, in sharp contrast to the Gordon Browns, Obamas, and Clintons of the Left.

He now has a terrible responsibility, as the world’s leading free market politician.

At least he did not say our diversity is our strength and must be of our most paramount concern as we welcome new neighbors from foreign lands into our mists.

It’s a step, look at Canada, Harper started under similar circumstances, and has managed to keep the Tories in power for many years now. Patience.

I consider Cameron to be left of center, if he was an American politician he'd be similar to the Maine twins or Colin Powell -- an Obama butt kissing "green" politician who wants to distance himself from "scary" Reagan-Thather conservatives as much as possible. I wouldn't trust this guy to govern reliably conservative if his party had 60% of the seats in the House of Commons. Now that his government is dependent on the Lib Dems to survive, it will probably be like California under Ahnuld. As much as I'd like to be happy seeing the first "Conservative" UK prime minister elected since 1992, I have to be pessimistic knowing Cameron's actual views and which party he's in "coalition" with to form a majority.

Merkel did slightly better in Germany when she was in a "grand coalition" with the major left-wing party, but unlike Cameron she holds some actual solid conservative views. Cameron just appears to be Tony Blair with a "Tory" button on.

Seems like all the decent conservative leaders in Europe these days are only found in Eastern Europe (and I say this as someone of pure western european ancestry)

I would not be that optimistic when it comes to Cameron. Billyboy is probably right to say this is like the return of Rockefeller Republican type. In his first speech he said something like this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/election_2010/8676405.stm

“And a guide for that society, that those who can, should, and those who can’t, we will always help. I want to make sure that my government always looks after the elderly, the frail, the poorest in our country.”

“We must take everyone through with us on some of the difficult decisions we have ahead. Above all, it will be a government that is built on some clear values: values of freedom, values of fairness and values of responsibility.”

This goes far beyond of what Stephen Harper will ever say. And news pundits say this is the classic Conservative Party’s left-wing faction would say.

I agree, in other words, Cameron is the Edward Heath of the 21st century.

Excellent analysis. I share it. Hopefully, some of the old guard Tories will eventually talk some sense into the kid.

So it’s a full coalition with the Liberal Democrats. That’s like a coalition of Republicans led by Susan Collins and a faction of democrats. Reason to celebrate? I actually felt sick upon hearing the news.

Clegg is called the most right-leaning leader in his party’s modern history. Funny but likely true, he’s on a “right” side of his leftist party. Their most prominent “right-leaning” member had to quit over a gay hooker scandal.

Amongst other concessions Cameron has offered a referendum on the alternate vote (instant runoff like Australia). 1 source says that would have cost the Tories 25 seats if it was used for this election. And helped Labour the most (Labour is said to favor it but many want to keep the current system). The Lib Dems really like a more proportional system that uncoincidentally would have really helped them.

No guarantee it will pass and the Tories are free to campaign against it but not good.

Also the talk is fixed 5 years terms. So the next election may not be until 2015 and under a system that it will be harder for the Tories to win under.

The best case for the Tories was not to make any deal. Let the left cobble together a majority or if they couldn’t Cameron would rule with a minority government. Wait a few months and win a majority in the inevitable election.

Labour is said to not have seriously negotiated with the Lib Dems. One Labour bigwig said Clegg was behaving like “every harlot in history”. A deal with Labour would have required support from the nationalist parties or a least their support on confidence votes.

We may be seeing some BAD policy coming out of this government. I hope something leads to it falling before 2015. Cameron pushed hard for this deal, not a good sign as to his character.

Poland is the gold standard in Europe. It’s 2 largest parties are both right of center.

1 thing I like about the UK system is that the new guy takes over at once.

If Cameron had won a majority he’d have been PM the next day. No chance for lame duck shenanigans like Clinton’s pardons.

I forget to add.

According to a graphic I’ve seen Lib Dem voters prefer Labour as their second choice by 2-1 over the Tories (in the 80’s more preferred the Tories). Labour and the Tories each prefer the Lib Dems over each other by 3-1.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8506306.stm

Funny how the scary right-winger Thatcher did a lot better at the polls than Cameron did.
