Warming extinguishing lizards
The Scientist ^ | May 14, 2010 | Lauren Urban

The worst-case scenario of the consequences of global warming - mass extinctions - appears to be a reality for lizards, according to a new report in Science.

The authors found that 12 percent of local populations of lizards have already disappeared from hundreds of sites in Mexico. Furthermore, within the next 70 years, the authors predict that 1 in 5 lizard species will no longer exist anywhere on the planet, all the result of rising global temperatures.

Although a growing amount of data is showing the impact of climate change on species, these lizard extinctions were somewhat surprising, said Jack Sites, an evolutionary geneticist from Brigham Young University, and last author on the paper. "I had always presumed that lizards would be able to adapt to climate change by simply altering their behavior," he said. "However, this is not the case."

More scientists acting like climate change theory is a fact.

At least they don't seem to be attributing rising temperatures to the activity of mankind.

Mexicans are eating the lizards, maybe? Mexicans are not feeding their cats, and the cats are eating the lizards?

Why must this have anything to do with global warming?

This is just another example of mankind's inhumanity to our reptilian brethren.

I’m up here in the NorthEast and freezing my butt off and they’re complaining about lizards and climate change. Lizards like it hot. That’s why they live in the desert.

My first thought also.

Either eating the little Geico Geckos or trampling them to death.

Seems to me that the lizards would simply start appearing further north.

The entire history of the earth is about extinctions. Why should today be any different. Adapt or Die. Those are the rules.

There are lots of possibilities. Habitat destruction, a new invasive predator, *colder* than usual temperatures, cyclical disease in the populations. “Scientists” can be really dumb sometimes.

Unfathomable. How can this world ever be expected to survive a widespread lizard extinction? Certainly no such lizard genocides have ever occurred without man-made environmental catastrophes.

Whatever shall we do?

Perhaps someone will eventually (maybe 65 million years from now) find a way to build a theme park where people can view these extinct lizards from the comfort of their car. Michael Crichton would be proud.

Exactly.

Colder for sure, I live in the North East, and I can testify to that.

And when they mention habitat destruction, how much of this is caused by invasive species these same wing-nuts have brought here?

Or too many deer that can’t be shot except when and where our “officials” say we can?
