Fourteen feet is a long way to fall.
I recall jumping from a ten-foot brick wall onto a grassy slope (as a young teenager) and thinking it sure hurt like heck.

Poor guy. I feel bad for him. What if he was trying to catch them for his grandchild or something. (I know, he was only 51, but still.)

He dove after a batting practice ball?

Those don't even count!

In Milwaukee, this type of outcome is usually associated with beer. However, during batting practice?

“Fan who fell over railing at Miller Park dies”

See there, if he’d have been wearing his sign, someone could have stopped him.

32 feet per second per second.

It’s not just a good idea. It’s the law.

The herd is thinned by one. The overarching question is who is responsible for his failure to overcome balance and gravity? Can we blame the ball park for his improper use of a safety railing? Can we blame the maker of the railing? Can we blame the designer of the railing? Can we blame the pitcher for throwing the ball? Can we blame the batter for not hitting the ball hard enough? Finally, can we blame the doctors and hospital for treating him?
This man’s death is unfortunate, but hardly a tragedy, just an opportunity for a lawyer to make money...

I saw a guy fall over the railing along the right field walkway at the SF Giants game. He was trying to catch a Barry Bonds home run and landed on the cement walkway between the stadium and McCovey Cove. While my kids were watching the people fight for the ball out in the cove, I noticed a person directly below us who wasn't moving and in bad shape. They had an article on the guy the next day in the Chronicle and he was in the I.C.U. Never did hear how he ended up.

The ball well went over our head and there was no way to catch it and, yet, this guy got seriously messed up trying for it.

There should be warning signs posted. Those signs should be multi national, and include brail.

It would also be wise to have a fence put up. Also, there should be paid off duty policemen at the front, like manhole coverage.

Classes before the game should be held, to discuss the risks and possible injuries caused by falling off a deck, railing, or otherwise highly elevated place. Buses, radio, tv, and newsprint should regularly disclose the risks of falling from elevated points of Major League Ball Parks.

Finally, there should be a congressional investigation into these accidents. A new tax on tickets, beer, popcorn, baseballs, and baseball bats would help cover the costs of these measures.

I don’t think this falls into the “Darwin Award” category. It doesn’t sound like the man was acting irresponsibly - just a typical reaction by a fan to a ball hit his way. This was just a tragic accident.
