Professor dumped from oil spill team over writings
Associated Press ^ | May 19, 2010 | Jim Salter

A St. Louis scientist who was among a select group picked by the Obama administration to pursue a solution to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been removed from the group because of writings on his website, the U.S. Energy Department confirmed Wednesday.

Washington University physics professor Jonathan Katz was one of five top scientists chosen by the Department of Energy and attended meetings in Houston last week.

Though considered a leading scientist, Katz's website postings often touch on social issues. Some of those writings have stirred anger in the past and include postings defending homophobia and questioning the value of racial diversity efforts.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu was not aware of Katz's writings before selecting him for the panel, spokeswoman Stephanie Mueller said. It was not immediately clear how the department became aware of the writings.

"Dr. Chu has spoken with dozens of scientists and engineers as part of his work to help find solutions to stop the oil spill," a statement from the Energy Department said. "Some of Professor Katz's controversial writings have become a distraction from the critical work of addressing the oil spill. Professor Katz will no longer be involved in the Department's efforts."

Katz did not respond to a phone message and e-mail seeking an interview. The extent of work he performed on the oil spill recovery effort was not immediately known.

In a website posting titled "In Defense of Homophobia," Katz wrote about the AIDS epidemic.

"The human body was not designed to share hypodermic needles, it was not designed to be promiscuous, and it was not designed to engage in homosexual acts," he wrote."

Unless Katz was bringing up issues irrelevant to stopping the oil spill, it is the Obama administration that is politicizing the rescue efforts, and a manly Republican (like Palin or Bachmann) ought to say so.

Of course, what Katz is saying is true, which is why leftists would rather silence such people than debate them.

Oh, let’s NOT solve the oil spill problem if it’s someone who is non-PC who might help solve it!

Better we swim in oil than have a non-PC scientist on the solution team.

So much for ‘diversity’

One man's opinion on homosexuality is more important than cleaning up the "worse oil spill in the history of history"? I guess we know this administrations priorities.

If it were a communist, it would be “freedom of speech”. Liberals are hypocrites. Too bad many GOPers in Washington don’t have the guts to take them head on when they are in power.

When I have a big problem that I want solved, such as a serious illness or a huge oil spill, I really don’t give a tinker’s damn about what the political beliefs of the person is. I don’t care if they are straight or homosexual, socialist or conservative as long as they can do the job.

But with leftist nutjobs like the ones infesting the White House, politics is EVERYTHING, ability is nothing.

Katz may be just the guy we need to stop the leaks. Obama doesn’t care. Katz insulted his best friends in the whole wide world.

But of course it’s okay to be prejudiced against someone who doesn’t agree with you, if you’re a member of the Left in this nation.

Heaven forbid an issue get a rational airing in public.

It is amazing is it not, how "liberals" manage to silence critics. Like the principal who turns off the mike when the valedictorian says something about her religious faith.

I suppose the next thing that Obama will be doing is checking to see if they’re registered Democrats and if they voted for him ... LOL ...

I agree if he was bringing up these issues in official oil spill reports, where thy don’t belong, then there’s a problem, and I agree with the decision.

However if he just has these personal views and we on his personal, non-work related, website then no problem. And as usual the libs overstep their boundaries while screaming about freedom of speech (net neutrality) for their views.

Which is why we won’t achieve anything of note till political correctness ceases to exist.

As an illustration, I offer the Manhattan Project. Infested with communist symps and leftist scientists, yet they didn’t get sacked.
