MAP OF THE DAY: Is Katla Ready To Erupt And Bring Europe To Its Knees Again?

A report from University College London is pointing towards a near term eruption of Iceland's giant volcano, Katla, according to MSNBC.com (heard through Zero Hedge).
The President of Iceland has also cautioned against an imminent eruption saying that Europe, its governments, and its airline industry needs to prepare.
Katla happens to be one of the largest, southernmost volcanoes in Iceland, potentially causing an even graver threat to Europe than Eyjafjallajökull.

AHHHH! We're ALL gonna DIE!
Absolutely.
Just hang on to your Panama Hats.
By the way. Panama just discovered oil in El Darien. So take that Obama. Panama is getting ready to drill.
Maybe Panama will sell you a little oil for a zillion dollars a barrel...But maybe not. You are not a nice person...In fact, you are crazy.
Katla is a very big volcano which, if it erupts, would make Eyjafjallajökull (or Mt. St. Helens, for that matter) look insignificant. No hype needed, although we can be sure the MSM will provide some along with their usual ration of authoritative sounding but inane grade school level “scientific” commentary.
Another news media pure speculation?
P.S.I have Icelanders in my family and have been several times to Iceland. It is a wonderful place to visit with terrific people and things to do.
Can’t we just levy some fines against the volcano for exceeding carbon output?
Wouldn’t Katla blowing just be the icing on our ecological disaster cake!
No it is not news media speculation. Icelanders are in fact very much concerned about Katla. As someone said above if it goes, it will make EFJ look like a sputter which it was not.
Katla is very very dangerous and an eruption will have world wide consequences.
Sorry to you both. I wasn’t making light of the situation; simply commenting on the nature of the sensational in the media lately. If manmade or political disaster doesn’t do us in, I have no doubt that volcanoes and other massive natural disasters will take their toll.
It’s all part of the circle of life. I just feel like I’ve read nothing but negative craziness in the last few days.
Thanks for your first-hand knowledge.
Ok, We understand..but too many make light of something which is terribly serious and is bad bad news.
While back in Iceland, it was a relief to be free for a time of US news and hearing the Dear Leader bleat like a goat.
I did key into FR now and then but not too much because there are a fair number of Icelanders, some family members too, who are socialist and at the outset were 0bama supporters..but they haven’t said much on the last trip over...wake up mayhaps..
In the press:
“It’s a Katlastrophe!”
“It’s Katlastrophic!”
Lovin’ it already.
It’s refreshing to hear that the socialists across the pond are starting to “get it.”
And I appreciate the feedback on the situation. Being so far removed from it, we don’t understand or appreciate the gravity of the situation.
One can only hope. The AGW meme needs to be put in the coffin and buried.
You CURSED it! ;-)
Well, fear sells, that’s for sure. But they were afraid of Katla back when the first one went off. The last time it went, it didn’t stop for two years and it is the time that people in Europe died from starvation. Seems crops don’t grow real well when you don’t have warm months from ash cover.
Interesting commentary.
My grandson is interviewing for a job in Reykjavik next month. He has always liked living dangerously (he currently lives in Philly.)
No problem. I suspect we all agree that whatever does or doesn’t happen we can rely on the numb skulls who opted for the easy way out of college (aka “Journalism” school) to get most if not all of it wrong. My personal experience with reporters led me to conclude most share with politicians a rare combination of exceeding arrogance and near total ignorance. Scare mongering is their stock and trade.
