“When Trumpets Fade”
Okay, who here remembers DITHF?
Old-timers should know that we had a pretty good Hurtgen Forest battle right here on FR.
Wasn’t “Hell is for Heroes” a Hurtgen/Siegfreid line movie?
Have you ever committed sodomy?
And a tribute post to my old, troubled friend. May you have found the peace you sought, harpseal.
Do I get a pin?

So many names from those early days! Those who just left, were tossed, or who went to the Memorial Wall. Mr. Confetti Man, BCJohnson and RR (good friend of MoJo) come to mind. Twit is another. I happily date myself for knowing of these Freepers, and the antics of others!.
Names keep coming up! Remember Fred Mertz? I think he left on his own or for a disagreement.
One I will never forget was Michael Gallutia — who was one of the very first Freepers, before we were Freepers. Neat guy! He had a brilliant mind and was one of those who made FR such a success. Reading his posts made you think. He was also at the very first CPAC as we manned a booth. Even tho he was young enough to be my son, he always made sure I got back to my hotel room, always waited for me when we were going to lunch — but always as a friend, not as ‘mommy-sitter’. And great discussions with him! He just got busy and had to leave FR. Sorely missed!
Harrowup — you still around?
Anyone got the picture of BobJ wearing the Pinocchio outfit?
I need a laugh.
Never figured out what it was years ago and still don’t have any idea what your forest is.
Jim, you remember what it felt like, back when that pumped-up gasbag from Arkansas and his coterie of fools felt they were the future of America? Everybody on this thread remembers, and for the lurkers I'll simply state the obvious - it was a lot like now. I think it's the fight we were born for. Eagles up!
Amazing thread. I first heard about FR during the recount in Fl. It was the first time i’d ever seen conservatives protesting with passion...and I was hooked. Found it and lurked a couple years before getting up the gumption to register and post in ‘02.

This has to be the worst hijacking of a thread I have ever seen. A quest for movie recommendations goes off topic at post 3 and goes on for another 250 posts of nostalgia, never to go back on topic again.
I suggest you start a new thread asking again for movies on the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. Being the longest single battle in US military history, you would think there would be a movie or two about it, yet a Google search comes up with none aside from “When Trumpets Fade.” It is a good, gritty anti-war film that comes full circle, but it really has noething to do with the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. This movie could have been set about anywhere and kept the same message.
The Battle of the Bulge seems to have stolen all of the thunder from Hurtgen Forest.
