First I’ve seen of it. That area was like a foreign country 25 years ago. It ain’t improving.

A friend of mine and I were down in Fort Lauderdale for spring break back in 1989, and we decided to go check out the horse races at Hialeah. Boy, was that a mistake. Somehow I got us totally lost once I got off I-95 and we wound up in some part of town where NOTHING was in English, even the street signs were bi-lingual or only Spanish. I could’ve been in Mexico City or Havana or Managua for all I knew, and let me tell you, we two gringos in a newish Toyota Celica with Virginia plates were getting some pretty serious predatory looks from the locals.

We aborted and found our way back to Fort Lauderdale, which was just as well—we found out later that Hialeah was only running at night that particular day, and no way in Hell was I taking my pasty white Anglo tourist ass back down there at night. We never got anywhere near the track.

I saw this originally on CNN and later on Google news and Fox. There was nothing to indicate that the people were illegally here but rather they were of Cuban ethnicity. Are we back to the idea that was popular during the Perot campaign -- that all non-European immigrants should be deported both legal and illegal?

Homicidal public rage does not seem to be limited to any one ethnicity (as England is discovering in Cumbria). This is a tragic story. The killer should be executed in short order but that won't happen.

Dude, the perp killed himself. And I don't know where you're getting the rest of your post, either. You must be reading a different thread.

Believe it or not, Hialeah is the third largest Republican voting city in the nation. It is mostly lower middle class and NOT a ghetto. Last I was there, most of the inhabitants were white (Hispanic is NOT a race), albeit mostly speaking Spanglish. Violent crime-wise, it is safer than Forth Lauderdale, btw, last I checked.

...safer than Forth Lauderdale...

Is that the standard? I'd feel safer with the 'gators in the Everglades than on a street in urban Florida.

I lived three years in Miami area (99-02), and found that most of the "bad areas" (Opa-Locka, Liberty City, most of north county in general) were concentrated and that the hardcore criminal activity didn't exactly spread to neighborhoods like mine (Doral). You do pay quite a premium, however, to live in a decent neighborhood, but it is the same here in NYC anyway.

I was so lost at that point, I honestly don’t know if we were still in Hialeah or not. Wherever it was, it was a fairly rough-looking part of town, and one where a couple of obviously-lost out-of-staters drew some attention.

You’ll appreciate this: Myself and 2 Air Force coworkers from Homestead got off early from mid-shift and decided to drive to Crandon Park to catch the sunrise. Car...a Matador, not that it matters... goes Tango Uniform on the freeway. So three dopey white boys go walking around in Overtown at about 2 in the morning, looking for a phone. We go into a diner, and the only white person there is a girl working behind the counter, and you can just tell she’s terrified for us. Gets us the hell out of there and to a pay phone.
