Harvard profs busted for Weare teen party
Manchester Union Leader ^ | June 8, 2010 | MARK HAYWARD AND DAN O'BRIEN

Posted on 06/08/2010 8:08:30 AM PDT by billorites

Two Massachusetts doctors, both who teach at Harvard Medical School, were arrested Sunday and charged with facilitating an underage drinking party in which 70 teenagers -- mostly new graduates of St. Paul's School in Concord -- were placed into police custody.

Police said J. Wesley Boyd, 46, and Theonia Boyd, 49, were charged with facilitating an underage drinking party.

Wesley Boyd said he hosted the graduation party Sunday for his daughter, Ariana, who had graduated from St. Paul's School hours earlier. But the Boyds stressed in two e-mails to guests that drinking and drugs would not be tolerated, he said.

And Boyd even stood on a table at the party and repeated the prohibition, he said in an interview last night.

"We were not naive. We figured there was going to be drinking, but we would do everything we could to stop it," Boyd said. "Our problem was we trusted these kids like we trusted our kids. Some kids abused the crap out of us."

Police said they were called to 94 Martin Road about 11 p.m. Sunday after neighbors complained of a large party. So many people under 21 were at the party that Weare police called officers from Henniker, Dunbarton, Hopkinton and New Boston for help.

"By night's end, over 70 minors were taken into protective custody," police said in a statement. "Through investigation, it was learned that most, if not all, of the subjects taken into custody were celebrating their recent graduation from St. Paul's High School in Concord."

Boyd said the home belongs to a colleague of his who lives in Boston, who let him use it for the weekend. The Boyds provided pizza, soda and salad for the party, he said.

Boyd, a psychiatrist, said he never saw anyone drinking any alcohol. He acknowledged he may have thought one or two kids were intoxicated, but he couldn't know for sure because he saw no one drinking.

He was surprised when police showed photos, taken after the arrests, with large numbers of beer containers in the yard, he said.

Meanwhile, he said police made derogatory comments about some of the students taken into custody. They called an Asian a special-needs student; told an African-American he must be at St. Paul's on a basketball scholarship and described an Indian woman as a princess, Boyd said. A red-head was called "red," he said.

"You pick the stereotype, there were derogatory remarks being made about that person," he said.

He said police separated the students into groups they labeled as sober and intoxicated, but took them all into protective custody. And 30 cars at the home were towed to impound lots.

He said police tightened his handcuffs so tight that 3 1/2 of his fingers were still numb yesterday. When he complained, police just asked if he was a surgeon. Boyd said his wife is a pathologist; both teach at Harvard.

The couple were released on their own recognizance and will be arraigned in Goffstown District Court later this month. Boyd said he plans to fight the charges if they allege he knowingly provided alcohol or allowed its consumption.

St. Paul's School, a private boarding school for grades nine through 12, was founded in 1856. The Concord campus is home to 533 students and 100 faculty members, all of whom live on the 2,000-acre grounds. The school's graduation ceremony was held Sunday at 1 p.m.

They sound like whiney liberals.

“I did not have beer with those kids. Those allegations are false”

I expect this from people there, and, in fact, the entire faculty of Harvard.

They gave us the pot-smoking president we now have, didn’t they?

Well, it’s tempting to diss two Harvard professors, but this could happen to anybody. When you have 70 teens celebrating their graduation, it’s inevitable that a few of them will bring in some beer. It doesn’t sound as if the hosts provided any of it.

The police get a kick out of doing this sort of thing. And MADD will be overjoyed.

The Harvard profs have been taught well...always make your self the victim and, in emergency, use the race card

“... 70 teenagers — mostly new graduates of St. Paul’s School in Concord — were placed into police custody.”

Nice to read how the Dr. blamed the kids.

Next we’ll be hearing how it was the cops’ fault.

Unless the cops have proof that the parents supplied the beer for the party, I don’t see where they have probable cause for these charges.

If they didn’t provide the beer, the only premise for the charges would need to be some type of criminal negligence for failure to supervise — and if that’s their new standard for criminal charges, then a lot of parents are now in trouble for parenting!

Taking the non-drinking students into custody and impounding their cars — guaranteeing fees to the local towing company — also gives some insight into the police overreaction. I presume the cars were legally on private property.

Well, with regard to their looks, I’d say the Boyds are really, really guilty!

I'm sure that the cops loved the fact that he was whining about how tight the cuffs were.

And the fact that they asked if he was a surgeon is an indicator (IMHO) that he pulled out the "Do you know who I am?" card ... another thing that the cops just love. :-)

Sounds to me like things went about as they should have.

Bravo Sierra. Your statement is a lie. YOU are part of the problem. Teen drinking is illegal. If an 18 year old shows up on my property with alcohol in his possession (or in him) I'M calling the police.

Severe overreaction by cops. Was a time when cops would come and just break up the party. Geez, that was probabaly in the ‘70s. Now, everything is an automatic arrest.

I live in Goffstown. Maybe I’ll stop by for these court motions. The prosecutor is a world class ahole. I’ve seen him in action with the citizens in court as an observer.

I can believe everything stated in this article about the cops making derogatory remarks. I’ve seen it here. The cops are kids basically in their 20s. The supervisors don’t do much in terms of reigning them in.
