Why is China so obsessed about that one little island?

They see it as a “renegade” island. Secondly, they would like to integrate their economy into the mainland economy.

Because it is the remnant of Chang Kai-shek’s old Nationalist government, and therefore represents and existing government in waiting should the Red Chinese government ever go the way of the former Warsaw Pact governments.
