WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says oil companies that cause major spills like the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico should face unlimited liability for economic damages.

"... a series of bills Congress is working on in response to the spill."

Which number in the series is public execution? Does it include being drawn and quartered?

Pelosi is right. Although the damages must related to court payouts to private individuals. There should be a cap on payments to the government.

Hmmmm...wasn’t there something in the Constitution about ex-post facto laws and Bills of Attainder? Oh, wait, silly me! She has to READ the Constitution to know what’s in it!

Agreed. BP needs to pay each person whose livelihood was destroyed by THEIR spill. The limit is a joke.

We should be against the limit, too. The spill is BP’s responsibility, and they must pay what they have to.

Yes - any new law in this regard would not apply to the BP case.

Wow, think of what this will do the the US economy. What international company is going to want to do business in the US knowing that there is unlimited liability for things not totally in their control?

Those running footsteps you hear are the attorneys racing to file the paper work necessary to remove the oil companies assets from US jurisdiction.

Takeover industry list so far is auto, health, and now oil.

Are you a socialist?

Put the shoe on the other foot. How do you think international companies feel about not being FULLY COMPENSATED for what BP did?

What if a fine is levied against all oil spilling *AFTER* a date, say 12:01 am tomorrow? If the government levied, say a $10,000 per gallon fine on all oil leaking AFTER midnight tonight would it still be Ex Post Facto?

“Takeover industry list so far is auto, health, and now oil.”

A one hundred billion dollar judgment from a Liberal court should do the trick nicely.
