FORT GORDON, Ga. (AP) -- A civilian pretending to be a soldier convinced an Army officer to give him a sophisticated laser sight for military rifles before he was caught hours later on the base with a land mine, several grenades and night vision devices, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors said in a criminal complaint that Anthony Todd Saxon, 34, falsely pretended to be an Army master sergeant on Tuesday and sought to steal the infrared laser targeting sight.

Ah! A little clarity. Previous articles just said, “an explosive”, which these days could be an M-80.

A land mine, though, packs a lot more punch and import.

A civilian pretending to be a soldier convinced an Army officer to give him a sophisticated laser sight for military rifles . . .

I'm guessing this will not be good for the officer's career!

So, I wonder if he thinks he needs a laser sight to aim his landmine?

RE: I’m guessing this will not be good for the officer’s career .

I’m thinking this might be reflected on his OER/ —in a negative way. But with the current PC craze in the Army, maybe not. Retired Army

...that part sounds pretty shaky...why would an officer have it in the first place, and why would anyone just hand it over...?

It would be interesting to see someone use of of those babies with a scope. Maybe that makes the backscatter seem far away. After all, you'd have to look the wrong way through the scope to see that.
