John McCain's campaign claimed the Arizona senator couldn't pick one of his former fundraisers now headed to jail out of a lineup.
But new video unearthed by the campaign of his Republican primary challenger, former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, shows McCain standing next to convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein at events during McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.
The 4-minute video captures McCain at a pair of events with Rothstein, who was sentenced to 50 years in prison in June after confessing to running a $1.2 billion fraud operation. Rothstein showers McCain with praise during both events, and at one point McCain thanks him for his "friendship and support.
Rothstein donated and bundled more than $180,000 to McCain's 2008 presidential bid, almost a year before fraud allegations surfaced against him. When asked last month about McCain's relationship with Rothstein, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told The Arizona Republic, "John McCain couldn't pick him out of a lineup."
The Hayworth campaign, seeking to pick up ground in an increasingly nasty primary battle with the four-term senator, said the new video is proof that Rothstein and McCain were closer than the incumbent previously acknowledged.
"The tapes don't lie, McCain does," said Hayworth spokesman Mark Sanders.

C’mon JD make this stuff stick to old McNasty!
J.D. hitting back. Woo-Hoo! Hit him again harder - HARDER!
McLame got off on the Keating 5, but apparently never stopped cavorting with crooks.
YAHOOOO, Go JD! I was wondering when you were going to start coming back against that vicious old coot.
Keating 5? We all know that it was all the money in politics back then that forced him to violate the law./s
Notice, Charlie Crist and Bobby Jindal returned their Rothstein money, but not McCain:
Rothstein had close relationships with politicians in Florida and elsewhere, who quickly moved to distance themselves from him as his scheme came tumbling down late last year. The Florida Democratic and Republican parties returned contributions connected to Rothstein, along with Forida Gov. Charlie Crist and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, both Republicans.
And here is table showing that Rothstein's dirty money overwhelmingly went to McCain.
Distribution of Rothstein's Dirty Money
And we have this explanation from the Huffpo article:
McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said the $9,200 under McCain's control was given to four Arizona charities in November. The rest of the money was out of the campaign's control and was distributed to state GOP committees for the 2008 race, he said.
So, the money was distributed to state GOP committees. I wonder if Juan gained any IOUs as that money was distributed, and if he is now collecting any of those IOUs.
Correction to #9: Rothstein raised around $1.1 million for McCain, and by far the largest of his political contributions went to McCain.

McShame and sleaze—the two go together like love and marriage.
Thank goodness! I saw his email alert this morning and thought YAHOOO!!!
Thanks for the ping, SandRat, as always.
J.D. should make an ad of all of J.S. McCain’s lies. Maybe not all of them, just the most blatant ones, since there are just too many. More and more McCain brings to mind the Manchurian Candidate. He and Cindy are just way too creepy and both get that insane look in their eyes.
Bingo! McCain and Crist were buddies with Rothstein. This is ALSO McCain/Rothstein’s organized crime and gambling connection. Rothstein was tied into Sol Kerzner and others.
I have faith that Arizona conservatives will remove McCain, at all costs.
We must!
Bump!
Tool #2 is Juan's opposition to the Bush tax cuts - especially effective in this economy.
Hayworth’s new ads are much more threatening to McCain.
McCain is in the lead, but many of his voters are “lukewarm”
Will they show up at the primary?
Maybe not, but J.D. supporters will.
Stay tuned, folks!
