A Unitarian Universalist church might well be the last place you'd expect to find someone wearing a gun.
Maybe that's why Krysta Sutterfield chose the Unitarian church in Brookfield for an open-carry demonstration on Sunday. If she wanted to bring attention to the gun rights debate, she surely succeeded, though she probably didn't plan on getting arrested in the process.
Brookfield police said Thursday they were called to the church at 13001 W. North Ave. about 10:30 a.m. by a church staffer who said a woman was wearing a handgun in a hip holster. By the time three squad cars arrived, Sutterfield was driving away. She was stopped, and police found the loaded 9mm gun in a zipped case on the passenger seat.
She was handcuffed, taken to the police station, processed and ticketed for having the loaded gun in her car - a state forfeiture citation, not a criminal offense. Sutterfield was then released.

What, they expected a well-dressed lady would stick her gun under her belt to wear it to church??
Geez. So what’s the point?
She turns off people who could be on our side and looses her gun in the process.
Actually her gun was not loose in her holster, it was secured.
But she did lose her gun.
Sorry. I’ve had coffee. I can’t help myself ;-)
In GA, even with the passage of MUCH better CCW legislation, we still can’t carry in church, even though GA is an open carry state with simple CCW regs.
Anyone who reads this article and thinks that it’s a travesty of justice is on “our” side. Anyone that reads it and gets their panties in a bunch for whatever reason isn’t on “our” side and isn’t likely to ever switch.
Ga is open carry only if you go to the trouble of getting the CCW. And in Fulton Co, they make it as tough as possible for us folks in the north end. They closed the apps office in the north annex and expect everyone to go to two different offices all the way downtown.
I don’t think the Unitarians would ever be on our side.
Unconstitutional.
All true.
Gwinnett got me my GFL in less than 14 days. Only had to drive to L’ville to the probate court office and the print office. Simple and friendly. ;-)
I don’t open carry ‘cuz of disturbing the peace concerns.
CCW stands for CONCEALED Carry. There's no need to cause a panic, but open carry would and does, especially in some of the places I carry.
So do you support letting your enemy dictate your tactics?
--some years ago in Grant County a part-time gunsmith with a 4wd noted his acquaintance , the game warden, stuck in the snow. He stopped and pulled the warden out--who noticed a disassembled shotgun under the seat of the truck and cited him for it---
--incidentally, there was a suggestion of an attempt to repeal it this year's legislative session which drew horrified comments from some of the "outdoor" writers in assorted state publications---
She also creates grounds for the next case after _McDonald_, and wins us the incorporated right to carry openly in public and transport in vehicles without hassle.
She did nothing wrong.
Apparently the article was written before the author had an opportunity to watch the video on the site. I'm not usually one for videos, but this one's worth watching for the interview with Miss Sutterfield on why she carried to the UUC.
Let me have a slight disagreement with you.
She “picked a church” - not she walked into “her church”.
One of our usual members walking in with a handgun probably would raise a few eyebrows but that would be it.
Somebody armed just walking in off the street would draw the attention of the elders at the door.
This is AngryJawa's shocked face.
This is just one of the many reason North FulCo needs to become a shiny new Milton county. But it would, of course be racist to even suggest it.
As far as OC goes, I'm glad there are folks that are willing to carry in the open and risk spooking the sheep and getting an up-close view of the sidewalk from a misinformed, overzealous cop. The upside of that risk is that they "normalize" the notion of civilian's with firearms in public, but it takes a motivated person to put up with the downsides. I stick to concealed carry mostly because I'm not the guy who wants to put up with explaining the law to soccer moms and the PoPo.
Add to that the UUC isn’t really a church, or a religion. More of a club to hang out at while trying to convince yourself you’re not going to hell.
Technically legal, but probably not the smartest thing.
