Bill White tried to create some daylight between himself and Gov. Rick Perry on the hot-button issue of immigration Monday whiley denouncing Arizona's controversial new crackdown on undocumented immigrants.
On Saturday, Perry told members of the National Council of La Raza that the Arizona law would be a poor fit for Texas, even while noting Arizona's frustration with a porous border.
Speaking to the same group Monday, White, Perry's Democratic challenger, inched further, suggesting the law's central tenet that local and state law-enforcement officials should verify the immigration status of people they detain is fundamentally misguided.
It would make our communities in Texas less safe, not more safe, if we took our local police officers and deputy sheriffs off the hard job of combating gangs and crime to do routine immigration work, the former Houston mayor said.
White promised to veto any legislation similar to the Arizona measure, and challenged Perry to make a similar commitment.
Monday was the third day of the Latino organization's four-day annual conference, which is being held this year in San Antonio.
White's speech came only a few minutes after the luncheon crowd joined in a mass-texting push to convince Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to move next year's All-Star game from Arizona, as a protest statement against Arizona's immigration measure, which goes into effect on July 29.
White quickly pivoted from immigration to education, the primary focus of his speech. He stressed a five-point plan that has become a staple of his stump speeches, drawing applause when he said Texas teachers should not be forced to teach students how to make a minimum score on a high-stakes multiple-choice test.
In what has become a recurring theme for White, he argued that Perry has artificially padded his gubernatorial record with deceptive statistics. White directed much of his ire at the Texas Projection Measure, a formula that enables students who fail portions of the standardized TAKS test to be credited with passing if they are regarded as likely to pass the test the next year.
Almost all the improvement in Texas education was made because they changed the goal line and the rules the year before elections started, White said. We will never get to the bottom of these problems by simply pretending they don't exist.
With regard to White's promise to veto Arizona-style legislation, Perry spokesman Mark Miner said, It's reckless (for White) to comment on a bill that hasn't been written.
Miner also dismissed White's criticisms of Perry's education record.
There's a reason this state is growing, and it's because we offer a quality education, he said.
Insanity....
He’s right. It’s a military matter, and invaders should be shot on sight at the site of the incursion.
And, who makes up the gang members, mostly?
What an idiot.
Using his flawed logic, it must not be the job of local police to enforce Federal drug laws, then.
Lieberals don’t need no steenking logic.
It’s all about what they feel.
Like little children.
But a population of little children is much easier for their cynical masters to manage.
While the Russians were hideously oppressed during the Soviet years, few of them were so convinced, as the majority of Americans seems to be, that a totalitarian collectivist state really has their best interests at heart.
When I was in Russia, most of the people were every bit as cynical about their government as their government was about them.
Difference was that the people couldn’t do, or even say in the “wrong company”, anything about it without being punished. Mental institutions, concentration camps, torture, and execution were the typical responses of the Soviet government when they discovered an “infidel”.
He (White) stressed a five-point plan that has become a staple of his stump speeches, drawing applause when he said Texas teachers should not be forced to teach students how to make a minimum score on a high-stakes multiple-choice test.
Good idea White, here's another. How about not wasting money trying to teach illegals and kids from Mehico how to speak and read english so they can take those tests. Or spending money printing spanish versions of the tests.
Even back when I was in high school long, long time ago, we had a class full of kids who couldn't speak a word of english and they had a set of teachers whose sole purpose was to teach them. These kids didn't want to be taught, it was obvious the way they acted and treated the teachers.
How did Texas sever get this screwed, politically? It’s certainly not the Texas I grew up in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Never forget Bill White’s city, Houston, is a sanctuary city.
Hey BIll how do cities and states then participate in ICE 287g, a program that partners local police with ICE to identify and detain illegals.
Damn this chit sympathy for law breakers gets old
“White directed much of his ire at the Texas Projection Measure, a formula that enables students who fail portions of the standardized TAKS test to be credited with passing if they are regarded as likely to pass the test the next year.”
I’m Likely to win the lottery next year. Gimme the money now.
Obama is not likely to be President after the next election. Remove him right now.
The Budget is likely to pass next year, so just pretend it passed now (oops, they already did that one)
Well, that makes it a LITTLE easier to vote for Perry but he is being a jerk on this issue.
Former mayor (Henry Cisneros) denounces Arizona law

There seems to be a bunch of “flawed logic” down in Texas!
” a formula that enables students who fail portions of the standardized TAKS test to be credited with passing if they are regarded as likely to pass the test the next year.”
WTH?
> a formula that enables students who fail portions of the

See? It’s all about feelings.
So Perry and White are trying to top each other on amnesty in front of La Raza. Great. It boggles the mind that some once said Perry would be a good Republican nominee for president. He’s Bush II on a lot of issues, and I don’t mean that in a good way.
SB 1070 is great. I love it. But... you really HAVE to go after the employers, and HARD. Use the anti-racketeering RICO laws to seize company assets, like we seize assets of the drug traffickers.
Then....When the job’s start to dry up. Tell the illegals they got 60 days to get their A$$es out. Sure, you can allow some back in as “guest workers”. Under my plan the voluntary returners get their applications moved to the top. The others get an all expenses paid vacation on the US side of the border helping to build the fence that they will be shoved through when done. Thats a strong incentive to join the voluntary returners. The apps of the fence assistants will also have an uncertain outcome.
GFY Perry.
White promised to veto any legislation similar to the Arizona measure, and challenged Perry to make a similar commitment.
Likewise Bill W.
White people better get thier heads out of thier rearends.
You know... it’s really ironic how the illegals LOVE to work hard for a paycheck. I have never thought they didn’t like working.
But when it comes to getting a good education so you can be prepared for the current workforce...... There’s just this weird disconnect. They just don’t care much if their kids drop out.
I think, culturally, that HAS to be why Mexico is in the shape it’s in today.
We can look at sanctury city Houston to measure the former Mayor’s assertion that unchecked illegal immigration is “safe” for the American population there. Crime and corruption in Houston is off the charts.
“It boggles the mind that some once said Perry would be a good Republican nominee for president. Hes Bush II on a lot of issues, and I dont mean that in a good way”
Perry is just a Republican Elitist that has been bought and paid for by his big money contributors who, coincidentally, are profiting from employing the illegals.
Perry is just protecting their turf.
