TUCSON, Ariz. Fighting the last war is supposed to be a bad idea. For Sen. John McCain, it might end up being the path to reelection.
As he faces a smashmouth Republican primary challenge in the shape of former congressman and radio talk show host J.D. Hayworth, McCain seems to be reliving his 2008 campaign experience--competing with a younger, more charismatic opponent whom he transparently does not like. Hes even still dodging criticism about an aimless and dull presidential campaign.
And listening to McCain himself, its sometimes hard to tell that hes not literally still running against Barack Obama.
At a pair of debates in Phoenix and Tucson this weekend, McCain refrained from matching Hayworth blow for blow and instead aimed many of his punches at a man who is not on the ballot.
When Hayworth attacked him for supporting the 2008 bank bailouts, McCain blasted the Obama administration for committing generational theft. When he was accused of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants, McCain repeatedly blamed Obama for failing to secure the border. On Afghanistan, the Arizona senator called Obama an uncertain trumpet.
Other embattled incumbents this year-Democrats Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania and Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas, and Republican Bob Bennett in Utah-attempted to survive difficult primaries by casting themselves as strong advocates for their states. McCain, however, only gestures in that direction, campaigning instead as the national politician that he is and casting himself as the leader of a resistance movement that extends well beyond the Arizona border.
I am proud of the leadership position I have taken fighting this administration, McCain said at the Phoenix debate Friday.

O RLY, Juan?
Hayworth also accused McCain during both debates of attacking him more aggressively than the senator fought Obama in 2008, a complaint the former congressmans supporters echo.
FUJM!!! GO J.D. GO!!!
I am not sure how JD can get this across to AZ voters but McCain is a lap poodle for Obama. He fawns over Obama, makes excuses for him and other BS.
A lady in AZ brought up the BC and MCCain said “oh no maam - Obama loves the Constitution.” McCain is the biggest effing Obama apologist.
McCain sickens me.
Yes, in my latest hallucinations, I am a leader of the Tea Party, dammit!
McCane is dilusional. Pure dementia.

When a crowd member said at a town meeting in Lakeville, Minn., on Friday that he feared what would happen if Obama were elected, McCain said that Obama is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States.
Sorry, rabscuttle385.
I know it is just me, but those type of awful photos really depress me.
“...Pure dementia.”
or cancer or both.
Everybody here today supporting John McCain, were all part of that tea party movement.

McCain is the poster child for term limits.
No doubt if he is reelected he will go back to being the consummate RINO, playing to Obama and the media so he can return to his role of being the “Republican” guest on the Sunday morning talk show circuit. Should Hayworth defeat him, Lindsay Graham is well positioned to take over the role of Republican spokesperson on the liberal Sunday talk circuit.
Smash mouth? Is Politico so far out of things they don’t know that McCain has spent over $12 million attacking JD? This is the first chance JD had to set the record straight. With the entire MSM taking McCain’s side in this and the unfair dollar advantage, and the advantage of the incumbancy you’d think McCain would be doing a lot better.
We have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency, right you old coot? Your time is up, Juan. Pack your bags but PLEASE don’t come back to Arizona. We’ve had enough of you.
Everybody here today supporting John McCain, were all part of that tea party movement.

Thank you, Donna.
The few times I have hinted at this, I had to wear my flame suit.
Further, and this is where I get blasted, she must have known, unless she is stupid, that McCain was receiving money from Soros in the past (before she joined him...or that is what is said...he may still be receiving money from him).
She also knew that there was a great controversy about his being born in the Colon, Rep of Panama. (I will spare you for now why he could never have been born in the Canal Zone. Had he been born in the CZ, it still would have made him ineligible to become president.)
By the way, I was born in the Canal Zone, and still live in Panama, so I am closer the facts of his phony CZ birth.
There are no words in the English or Spanish language that come near how much I detest this disease carrying ameba.
Since he is totally nuts, no normal person can put themselves in his sick mind to know his dysfunctional problems.
By the way, I dont follow his fat, nasty daughter. It seems her mouth has been taped up for a while.
I just put my money where my mouth is and slipped JD a $20. It was like taking maalox, the feeling of relief was instantaneous and real.
Frustration with the elder clown is replaced with hope.
Oh please, Politico. Who are you trying to kid. McCain simply bent over for Hussein, frightened to DEATH that the race card might be played—even more than it WAS! But Juan has attacked JD, as he is more than willing to do ANY conservative. Attack—in other words, TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT—leftists? NEVER!! That would damage his DC image and cancel all of the fawning NY Times coverage the “maverick” so relishes!!
ROFL, Juan, your nose in so far up Soetoro's tuchus, you've met Larry Sinclair and George Soros for lunch. ESAD McDEMOCRAT! Go JD!
The only folks McCain has a habit of campaigning vs negatively are Republicans when he is locked in a primary fight. But when he is campaigning vs Dems in the general election he takes the high road.I guess he has to because more often than not he has voted with the Dem side of the aisle on the big marquee issues.
