'I say let all video and audio recordings "

Goodbye bathwater, goodbye baby. So, you wouldn't have any problems if at your parent-teacher conferences about one of your children, the teacher surreptitiously records that conversation, and posts it on YouTube?

I can think of hundreds of reasons why what you suggest is a bad idea. I think the standard, "reasonable expectation of privacy" is a sound standard. The problem is it's not be enforced. The threshold were a cop loses his expectation of privacy should be low - perhaps not non-existent, but very low.

and yet it is legal for police to video and wiretap the back seats of their cars.

it is legal to video their own actions themselves.

Police have no expectation of privacy when in uniform. this is why they have appearance and conduct rules.

How in the hell are you going to punish someone for recording the light reflected from an adult in a public area?

It should not only be legal, it should be required that officers themselves record every official act involving members of the public.

Nah, it's better if they mind their own business and let us do it if we want to. When they're in charge of the taping, the tape only appears when it supports their version of events. If it's bad for them, there are "technical difficulties".

So cops call ahead and have the 7-11 turn off the camera if they want to stop for a donut?

Well, what I MEANT to say and what I ACTUALLY said are, as is frequently the case when I fail to carefully proof my post, is there is NO good reason to PROHIBIT the taking of officers doing their job! Geesh. Seems like I'd learn.

"If the ACLU is for videotaping police, I’m against it."

...because you are incapable of independent thought?

If the cop is in a public space, he’s subject to be videotaped. Period. The first amendment applies to ALL people. If he wants privacy, he should stay home.

Stop it! Leave me alone! Mamma, they’re picking on me! And to make matters worse, I used the wrong there there. This reminds me of my years at a major daily newspaper. The copy editor was the bane of my existence. My writing was limited to captioning the photos I had taken, but they could always find something to pick on. Much of it was in good jest, but they can be picky, picky, picky. There was one in particular that lived to edit my work. Thanks!

So, NOW we know why the Las Vegas Costco won’t release the videos.
