In a major development, Rep. Betty Sutton (Ohio) on Friday night called on beleaguered Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) to resign.

Sutton has built a reputation as a crusader for congressional ethics. In 2008, she led the fight to pass legislation creating the Office of Congressional Ethics, which now serves as an independent ethics body within the House of Representatives.

In March, Sutton donated to charity the $7,000 given to her campaign by Rangel.

Earlier this year, Sutton called on Rangel to resign as Ways and Means Committee chairman days before the New York Democrat — under pressure from House Democratic leaders — gave up his gavel.

Rangel has dragged this out precisely because he could and Pelosi has been behind him all the way. The Democrats may have miscalculated and painted themselves into a corner ( sort of like when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union). I guess we'll find out. Anyone remember when Rostenkowski got fired?
